The Sacramento Public Library and the City of Sacramento celebrated the grand reopening of the Martin Luther King Jr. Library on Saturday, unveiling major upgrades designed to make the Meadowview neighborhood library a more welcoming and interactive space for the community.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the end of an 18-month renovation project for the library, which was originally built in 1970.

The newly renovated space features more than 20,000 new books, along with updated technology and hands-on learning opportunities for children, teens and adults.

Visitors can now explore 3D technology, use an audio booth to record music and podcasts, and take part in activities inside maker spaces designed for people of all ages.

Library leaders said the goal is to remind families that libraries offer much more than books. They hope the renovated facility becomes a gathering place where people can learn new skills, explore their creativity, and develop a lifelong love of reading.

The grand reopening celebration gave families a chance to explore the transformed library and see the new resources firsthand.

For many families attending the celebration, the improvements were a welcome investment in the Meadowview neighborhood.

Sacramento Mayor Kevin McCarty said the renovation was made possible with the help of a $9 million grant from the state.

Library leaders said they hope the improvements will bring even more people through the doors while helping strengthen literacy in Sacramento and creating an inclusive community space for generations to come.
