There are two choices that should be no-brainers for California voters in November.<\/p>\n
One is to support Proposition 39<\/a>, which would require ID to vote.<\/p>\n The other is to oppose Proposition 40<\/a>, the so-called \u201cbillionaire tax.\u201d<\/p>\n Yet both of these sensible positions are underwater, according to the most recent poll<\/a>.<\/p>\n There are two choices that should be no-brainers for California voters in November. AP<\/p>\n One is to support Proposition 39, which would require ID to vote. AP<\/p>\n The \u201cbillionaire tax\u201d is leading \u2014 albeit with less than a majority \u2014 with 48% of likely voters supporting it, and only 41% opposed.\u00a0<\/p>\n And voter ID is losing, with 51% opposing it, and 42% supporting it.<\/p>\n That\u2019s despite opinion polls consistently showing that voters across the board \u2014 including Democrats and minorities \u2014 believe that voters should have to show ID to vote.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\t\t\tSign up for the California Morning Report newsletter\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tCalifornia’s top news, sports and entertainment delivered to your inbox every day.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\t\tThanks for signing up!\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n Notably, the poll used the same misleading title and description that California Attorney General Rob Bonta slapped onto the voter ID initiative.\u00a0<\/p>\n He replaced the original title approved by his office \u2014 \u201cEstablishes Additional Voter Identification and Citizenship Verification Requirements\u201d \u2014 with a new title, \u201cProhibits Citizens from Voting Unless They Present Government-Issued Identification.\u201d<\/p>\n No wonder the polls look so bad. (Carlos Barria) REUTERS<\/p>\n What Proposition 39 intends to do is the opposite \u2014 namely, to prevent noncitizens from voting. There are no \u201cone-time\u201d or \u201ctemporary\u201d taxes.<\/p>\n U.S. Rep. (Hearst Newspapers) San Francisco Chronicle via Getty Images<\/p>\n Just look at one of the other ballot propositions, Proposition 3.<\/p>\n It would make a \u201ctemporary\u201d tax on the rich, enacted in 2012, permanent.<\/p>\n That one, too, has a misleading title: \u201cProvides Permanent Funding for Schools and Health Care,\u201d it begins. The part about taxes comes at the end.<\/p>\n It would be tragic if California voters passed Proposition 40 while voting down Proposition 39 \u2014 taking away the property of our fellow citizens, while making it harder for citizens to do anything about it through the ballot box.<\/p>\n Now is the time for everyone who cares about the future of the state, from all parties, to set politics aside and stand up for common sense and what\u2019s right.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\t\t
