An online petition is calling on Bakersfield officials to protect Buck Owens\u2019 Crystal Palace amid concerns that a potential buyer could demolish the landmark country music venue.<\/p>\n

The campaign was launched after reports surfaced that an unidentified developer had submitted an offer to purchase and redevelop the property.<\/p>\n

Driving the news: Bakersfield resident Sarena Baker created the Change.org petition<\/a> on Aug. 13.<\/p>\n

The petition asks the Bakersfield City Council, Mayor Karen Goh, the Kern County Board of Supervisors and state historic preservation officials to pursue landmark protections for the property.<\/p>\n

Organizers also want local officials to prevent demolition or rezoning that could threaten the venue.<\/p>\n

Why it matters: The Crystal Palace opened in 1996 as Buck Owens\u2019 tribute to the music and culture that made Bakersfield internationally known.<\/p>\n

For nearly three decades, the property operated as a restaurant, museum and performance venue. It hosted country music stars and displayed memorabilia from Owens\u2019 career while serving as an unofficial home of the Bakersfield Sound.<\/p>\n

The venue closed in August 2025 after 28 years in business.<\/p>\n

At the time, the Owens family cited a challenging business climate and its desire to step away from managing the property.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is our hope that new owners will step forward to utilize this beautiful venue,\u201d the family said in its closure announcement<\/a>.<\/p>\n

By the numbers: The property at 2800 Buck Owens Blvd. remains listed for $5.75 million.<\/p>\n

According to its commercial real estate listing<\/a>, the offering includes:<\/p>\n

A 21,354-square-foot, two-story building.<\/p>\n

Approximately 3.1 acres of land.<\/p>\n

Restaurant, bar, kitchen and entertainment equipment.<\/p>\n

Sound, lighting and video systems.<\/p>\n

The iconic Bakersfield arch and a 75-foot freeway sign.<\/p>\n

Nearly 200 parking spaces.<\/p>\n

Naming rights to Buck Owens\u2019 Crystal Palace and the red, white and blue guitar logo are not included in the sale. The listing says select memorabilia may be included depending on negotiations with the seller.<\/p>\n

The backstory: Bakersfield officials previously explored whether the city could purchase the Crystal Palace or offer incentives to preserve it as a concert venue.<\/p>\n

Ward 2 Councilman Andrae Gonzales warned in 2025 that losing the property or converting it into another commercial use would be a major cultural loss for the city.<\/p>\n

City officials said at the time that any public acquisition would have to be weighed against other priorities, including public safety and homelessness.<\/p>\n

What remains unclear: No sale has been publicly completed, and the identity of the prospective buyer has not been disclosed.<\/p>\n

The property\u2019s active listing also does not identify demolition or redevelopment as an approved plan.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s next: Petition organizers are seeking formal historic designation before a sale or redevelopment moves forward.<\/p>\n
