California rolls out ‘Driving ABCs’ campaign to protect bicyclists and children on Sacramento roads<\/p>\n

As a steady stream of cars and trucks drove on Marysville Boulevard, state and local leaders stood along Marysville Boulevard a few blocks away from Grant High School to kick off a new statewide social media campaign aimed at protecting walkers and bicyclists in time for the back to school season. <\/p>\n

The California Office of Traffic unveiled a new “Driving ABCs ALERT for BICYCLISTS and CHILDREN crossing.”<\/p>\n

“It’s not just drop-off or pickup. It’s every time you get behind the wheel. Every trip,” said Stephanie Dougherty, the director of California’s Office of Traffic Safety. <\/p>\n

According to federal data, 1,253 people were killed while walking or biking on California roads in 2024, accounting for nearly a third (32%) of all people killed in car crashes.<\/p>\n

In Sacramento, Marysville Boulevard is ranked as one of the top five corridors for pedestrian-related crashes and is a top priority in the City’s Vision Zero plan to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries by 2027.<\/p>\n

The roadway has seen recent Vision Zero improvements, including protected and buffered bike lanes and high-visibility crosswalks.<\/p>\n

The new school zone safety media campaign is scheduled to run statewide over the next two weeks.<\/p>\n
