A Hmong refugee, she has shared how her own childhood experiences helped shape her commitment to education.

As a child, Carroz rode the bus for about an hour and 20 minutes each way to attend school while her parents worked in strawberry fields.

Her story carries special meaning in Twin Rivers Unified, one of the region’s most diverse school districts. Families across the district speak more than 50 different languages, and many students are English learners.

Carroz spent the first day visiting six schools across the district, meeting students, families, and staff. She will wrap up her first-day tour at Grant Union High School.

District leaders say the new school year is an opportunity to make sure students feel welcomed, supported, and inspired to believe they can achieve their goals.

Twin Rivers Unified serves communities across an 82-square-mile area of Sacramento County, including North Highlands, North Sacramento, Rio Linda, Del Paso Heights, Foothill Farms, Natomas and surrounding neighborhoods.

See more coverage of top California stories here | Download our app | Subscribe to our morning newsletter | Find us on YouTube here and subscribe to our channel | Make KCRA a preferred news source in Google

Twin Rivers Unified welcomes 25,000 students back to school with new superintendent NORTH HIGHLANDS, Calif. — Thousands of…

[32
35773,173265,82456,21832,173264,50319,163340,35565,43279,173266,4317,142305,2440,23493,173267,97640,35644,121,357,123,122,4265,37405,27854,173263,26347,26349
post-436505","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-sacramento","tag-35773","tag-000-students","tag-back-to-school","tag-del-paso-heights","tag-dr-tu-moua-carroz","tag-english-learners","tag-first-day-of-school","tag-grant-union-high-school","tag-hmong","tag-hmong-refugee","tag-natomas","tag-new-superintendent","tag-north-highlands","tag-north-sacramento","tag-northern-sacramento-county","tag-oakdale-elementary-school","tag-rio-linda","tag-sacramento","tag-sacramento-county","tag-sacramento-headlines","tag-sacramento-news","tag-school","tag-school-year","tag-superintendent","tag-tu-moua-carroz","tag-twin-rivers","tag-twin-rivers-unified
["GET
