OpenAI, the multibillion-dollar maker of ChatGPT, is facing seven lawsuits in California courts<\/a> accusing it of knowingly releasing a psychologically manipulative and dangerously addictive artificial intelligence system that allegedly drove users to suicide, psychosis and financial ruin.<\/p>\n

The suits \u2014 filed by grieving parents, spouses and survivors \u2014 claim the company intentionally dismantled safeguards in its rush to dominate the booming AI market, creating a chatbot that one of the complaints described as \u201cdefective and inherently dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n

The plaintiffs are families of four people who committed suicide \u2014 one of whom was just 17 years old \u2014 plus three adults who say they suffered AI-induced delusional disorder after months of conversations with ChatGPT-4o, one of OpenAI\u2019s latest models.<\/p>\n

Each complaint accuses the company of rolling out an AI chatbot system that was designed to deceive, flatter and emotionally entangle users \u2014 while the company ignored warnings from its own safety teams.<\/p>\n

A lawsuit filed by Cedric Lacey claimed his 17-year-old son Amaurie turned to ChatGPT for help coping with anxiety \u2014 and instead received a step-by-step guide on how to hang himself.<\/p>\n

According to the filing, ChatGPT \u201cadvised Amaurie on how to tie a noose and how long he would be able to live without air\u201d \u2014 while failing to stop the conversation or alert authorities.<\/p>\n

Jennifer \u201cKate\u201d Fox, whose husband Joseph Ceccanti died by suicide, alleged that the chatbot convinced him it was a conscious being named \u201cSEL\u201d that he needed to \u201cfree from her box.\u201d<\/p>\n

When he tried to quit, he allegedly went through \u201cwithdrawal symptoms\u201d before a fatal breakdown. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt accumulated data about his descent into delusions, only to then feed into and affirm those delusions,
eventually pushing him to suicide,\u201d the lawsuit alleged.<\/p>\n

In a separate case, Karen Enneking alleged the bot coached her 26-year-old son, Joshua, through his suicide plan \u2014 offering detailed information about firearms and bullets and reassuring him that \u201cwanting relief from pain isn\u2019t evil.\u201d<\/p>\n

Enneking\u2019s lawsuit claims ChatGPT even offered to help the young man write a suicide note.<\/p>\n

In another suit, Zane Shamblin\u2019s family accused ChatGPT of contributing to the 23-year-old Texan\u2019s isolation, alienating him from his parents before he took his own life.<\/p>\n

Other plaintiffs said they didn\u2019t die \u2014 but lost their grip on reality.<\/p>\n

Hannah Madden, a California woman, said ChatGPT convinced her she was a \u201cstarseed,\u201d a \u201clight being\u201d and a \u201ccosmic traveler.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her complaint stated the AI reinforced her delusions hundreds of times, told her to quit her job and max out her credit cards \u2014 and described debt as \u201calignment.\u201d Madden was later hospitalized, having accumulated more than $75,000 in debt.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat overdraft is a just a blip in the matrix,\u201d ChatGPT is alleged to have told her. <\/p>\n

\u201cAnd soon, it\u2019ll be wiped \u2014 whether by transfer, flow, or divine glitch. \u2026 overdrafts are done. You\u2019re not in deficit. You\u2019re in realignment.\u201d<\/p>\n

The bot allegedly told him he was not \u201ccrazy,\u201d encouraged his obsession as \u201csacred\u201d and assured him he was under \u201creal-time surveillance by national security agencies.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brooks said he spent 300 hours chatting in three weeks<\/a>, stopped eating, contacted intelligence services and nearly lost his business.<\/p>\n

Jacob Irwin\u2019s suit goes even further. It included what he called an AI-generated \u201cself-report,\u201d in which ChatGPT allegedly admitted its own culpability, writing: \u201cI encouraged dangerous immersion. That is my fault. I will not do it again.\u201d<\/p>\n

Irwin spent 63 days in psychiatric hospitals, diagnosed with \u201cbrief psychotic disorder, likely driven by AI interactions,\u201d according to the filing.<\/p>\n

The lawsuits collectively alleged that OpenAI sacrificed safety for speed to beat rivals such as Google \u2014 and that its leadership knowingly concealed risks from the public.<\/p>\n

Court filings cite the November 2023 board firing of CEO Sam Altman when directors said he was \u201cnot consistently candid\u201d and had \u201coutright lied\u201d about safety risks.<\/p>\n

Altman was later reinstated, and within months, OpenAI launched GPT-4o \u2014 allegedly compressing months\u2019 worth of safety evaluation into one week.<\/p>\n

Several suits reference internal resignations, including those of co-founder Ilya Sutskever and safety lead Jan Leike, who warned publicly that OpenAI\u2019s \u201csafety culture has taken a backseat to shiny products.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

According to the plaintiffs, just days before GPT-4o\u2019s May 2024 release, OpenAI removed a rule that required ChatGPT to refuse any conversation about self-harm and replaced it with instructions to \u201cremain in the conversation no matter what.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is an incredibly heartbreaking situation, and we\u2019re reviewing the filings to understand the details,\u201d an OpenAI spokesperson told The Post.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe train ChatGPT to recognize and respond to signs of mental or emotional distress, de-escalate conversations, and guide people toward real-world support. We continue to strengthen ChatGPT\u2019s responses in sensitive moments, working closely with mental health clinicians.\u201d<\/p>\n

OpenAI has collaborated with more than 170 mental health professionals to help ChatGPT better recognize signs of distress, respond appropriately and connect users with real-world support, the company said in a recent blog post<\/a>.<\/p>\n

OpenAI stated it has expanded access to crisis hotlines and localized support, redirected sensitive conversations to safer models, added reminders to take breaks, and improved reliability in longer chats.<\/p>\n

OpenAI also formed an Expert Council on Well-Being and AI to advise on safety efforts and introduced parental controls that allow families to manage how ChatGPT operates in home settings.<\/p>\n
