A new business called “Ember Cafe” was registered with the city on Aug. 1. The program is funded by Head Start, Ryle added. It won’t operate a preschool like the one run by Mission Neighborhood Centers (also inside the Women’s Building) but will offer other services for children and their caregivers, including:

A workforce development program that helps people get licensed in early childhood education.

Drop-in support for caregivers looking for help connecting with child care options and community resources

A toy library for children with special needs, and classes for parents on how to best use these toys.

Parenting classes and play groups.

Wu Yee Children’s Services is also running its home visit program for pregnant and new families from the site.

“We have hundreds of children and families that we serve who are in the Mission and we try every single chance we get to go to where the families are,” said Ryle.

Boogaloos at 22nd and Valencia streets suffered an attack on Tuesday that left $20,000 in losses. A week and a half ago, Luna added, a single window was smashed in what might have been an attempted burglary — perpetrators got into the building and caused about $1,500 worth of damage, but didn’t manage steal anything valuable. This time, said Luna, the vandals did not make it into the space, but he estimates that the cost to repair the windows at around $20,000.

Luna said that after a call with his insurance company on Wednesday, he felt positive his policy will reimburse them for the window repair. In the meantime, however, the Lunas have to come up with the money to pay for repairs upfront — and deal with losses from having to be closed for two days.

The business’ cameras do not cover the sidewalk; hence, they did not capture footage of the attack.

Boogaloos will reopen starting tomorrow, said Luna. As for when the windows will be fixed, he said he’ll start contacting companies soon.

Boogaloos has been at the same corner since 1994 aside from a two-year hiatus from 2016-2018, after the building’s property manager nearly quadrupled the rent for the space before relenting and merely doubling it.
