The Giants are having their worst season<\/a> in nearly a decade, but team president Larry Baer confirmed Thursday that both president of baseball operations Buster Posey and manager Tony Vitello will be back with the organization next season.<\/p>\n

Despite starting the year with one of the MLB\u2019s largest payrolls, the Giants enter their game with the Cleveland Guardians on Thursday with the second-worst record (52-74) in the National League and are on pace to finish the season with their lowest win total since 2017<\/a>, when they went 64-98.<\/p>\n

Still, Baer, a guest on KNBR\u2019s \u201cMurph & Markus Show\u201d<\/a> on Thursday morning, expressed confidence in Posey and Vitello, saying he believes \u201c2027 can be a totally different year than 2026, and I think everybody to their core believes it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Posey, hired in Sept. 2024 to be the president of baseball operations, first told the San Francisco Standard<\/a> last weekend that Vitello would be back next year. Vitello, who spent eight years as the University of Tennessee\u2019s head coach before he joined the Giants last October, still has two more years remaining on his contract.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverybody\u2019s on the same page,\u201d Baer said. \u201cIt\u2019s Tony\u2019s obviously first year, and whatever growing pains exist for any first-year manager, whether it\u2019s first year ever in the majors or first year with a new team, they\u2019re going to be growing pains.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut the overall evaluation, I think, from everything I\u2019ve heard and top to bottom, is that Tony is 100% capable of taking this team where it needs to go to a championship down the road. The combination of Buster and Tony, and the front office, Tony\u2019s coaching staff, and Buster\u2019s front office people are going to be our future, and we\u2019re going to move that forward into 2027. So, absolutely, Tony\u2019s back.\u201d<\/p>\n

Posey\u2019s long-term signings of third baseman Matt Chapman and shortstop Willy Adames, and his acquisition of Rafael Devers from the Boston Red Sox last year, have not worked out as hoped. The Giants are 92-123 with Devers, who has seven years remaining on his 10-year, $313.5 million contract,<\/a> in the lineup.<\/p>\n

The Giants are also 20th in MLB in home runs (138) and OPS (.711), are 26th in RBIs (491), 27th in stolen bases (56) and rank last in walks (329).<\/a><\/p>\n

Posey, though, earned kudos for flipping infielder<\/a> Luis Arraez, outfielder Heliot Ramos and pitchers Robbie Ray, Tyler Mahle, Erik Miller and Caleb Kilian for prospects, helping restock the Giants\u2019 farm system.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been hard, obviously, for everybody, and at the very top of the list is Buster. It\u2019s really hard for him because he\u2019s incredibly competitive,\u201d Baer said. \u201cIt\u2019s why we won three championships under his leadership. When you\u2019re a catcher, you\u2019re a leader. You don\u2019t have any choice but to be a leader, especially when you\u2019re an everyday catcher, and you\u2019re managing a pitching staff that was critical to those championships.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, nobody\u2019s taking it harder than Buster, and I think that competitive fire has been giving us this adrenaline surge as we get younger and as we bring new people into the organization, as we did at the trade deadline and we\u2019ve done throughout the year. \u2026 It\u2019s not like people are walking around hanging their heads. They\u2019re walking around saying, \u2018let\u2019s go\u2019 and get the ship righted literally immediately into next season.\u201d<\/p>\n

WINN TO IL<\/p>\n

The Giants on Thursday placed right-hander Keaton Winn on the 15-day injured list with right elbow neuritis. The move is retroactive to August 19. Left-hander Reiver Sanmartin was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento to take Winn\u2019s place on the roster.<\/p>\n

SLASHING BEER PRICES FOR A GAME<\/p>\n

Baer also announced special beer prices for the Giants\u2019 Sept. 23 day game at Oracle Park against the Minnesota Twins. A Coors Light will be $6.80 and a Corona will be $10.45, prices that coincide with the team\u2019s flagship station\u2019s place on the AM and FM dials. It was unclear what the size of those beers would be.<\/p>\n

Vitello mentioned after Wednesday\u2019s game that Matt \u201cTugboat\u201d Wilkinson<\/a> will be available to pitch this weekend in Boston.
