OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. \u2013 More than a year after Alex Habib was killed in a crash<\/a> involving a teenager fleeing police, his family is honoring his memory by giving back to the community.<\/p>\n

Habib, 28, was working as an Uber driver on July 12, 2025, when a teenager driving a stolen vehicle crashed into his car near 11 Mile Road and Van Dyke Avenue in Warren. <\/p>\n

Habib was taken to a hospital, where he died from his injuries.<\/p>\n

Prosecutors say the driver, 16-year-old Daniel Shane Canales, was fleeing Roseville police, ran a red light, and reached speeds of about 130 mph before the crash. <\/p>\n

Canales is facing several charges<\/a> as an adult, including second-degree murder. <\/p>\n

His trial has been pushed back to December.<\/p>\n

Habib\u2019s wife, Danielle, is raising their two children, Eleanora and Santiago. Her parents, Dale and Debbie Durant, have stepped in to help as the family adjusts to life without him.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve had some good days, we\u2019ve had some bad days, but all in all, we\u2019re getting used to our new normal,\u201d Debbie Durant said.<\/p>\n

Family gatherings and birthdays can be especially difficult for the children, Durant said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we had Santi\u2019s birthday, Nora was like, \u2018Oh, papi\u2019s going to be there.\u2019 Those are the tough moments, I think,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know the truths, and at what point in time are you introducing them to those?\u201d Dale Durant said.<\/p>\n

The family established the Habibiforever Foundation in Habib\u2019s honor. This weekend, the non-profit will host a golf invitational<\/a>, with proceeds benefiting the Henry Ford SandCastles Grief Support Program.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe kind of just thought to honor his legacy and to do good and try to bring it to the forefront and see if we could help others,\u201d Dale Durant said.<\/p>\n

The Durants say they want to support others who are coping with loss, just as Danielle received support after Habib\u2019s death.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think we\u2019d like to give back because she had so much support when this happened,\u201d Debbie Durant said. \u201cSo she\u2019d like to go forward and turn around and support other people.\u201d<\/p>\n
