<\/p>\nBAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK\/KBFX) \u2014 A large-scale cleanup of homeless encampments on Wednesday along the Kern Riverbed in Bakersfield led to 17 arrests and the removal of nearly 23 tons of trash, according to officials.<\/p>\n
The operation took place Wednesday along the south embankment of the Kern River, stretching from Highway 99 to the Manor Street Bridge. Officials said 28 encampments were cleared and 19 dogs were taken into protective custody.<\/p>\n
One person was cited in the operation.<\/p>\n

Ahead of the cleanup, Flood Ministries conducted outreach and helped place 12 people into services at the Brundage Lane Navigation Center, M Street Navigation Center and Teen Challenge.<\/p>\n
The Bakersfield Police Department\u2019s Impact Unit and Unmanned Aircraft Systems Team worked alongside the City of Bakersfield Code Enforcement, Rapid Response Team, Bakersfield Fire Department Arson Division, Bakersfield City Animal Control, Kern County Public Works, Bakersfield City Park Rangers, Kern Medical Mobile Clinic and the Kern County Mental Health Department\u2019s Mental Evaluation Team.<\/p>\n
