The San Francisco 49ers made a splash in free agency by signing longtime Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans. The talented player entered the NFL in 2014 as the No. 7 overall draft pick and recorded more than 1,000 receiving yards in each of his first 11 seasons. He failed to reach that mark for the first time last season, when injuries limited him to just eight games.

Evans turned 33 today and will look to prove he still has plenty left in the tank, hoping last season was an anomaly rather than a sign that his skills are beginning to decline.

Bleacher Report’s Brad Gagnon questions the 49ers’ decision to sign Evans, giving the move an unfavorable C- grade. Gagnon acknowledged that San Francisco desperately needed a high-impact wide receiver and that Evans became a featured piece of a revamped receiving corps that head coach Kyle Shanahan hopes will help elevate the 49ers’ offense in 2026.

“But he’s now 33, coming off an injury-marred season, and dealing with a new ankle/foot injury in camp,” Gagnon added. “There’s a decent chance this blows up in the team’s face.”

Meanwhile, Evans’ new teammates believe the veteran wide receiver will command enough attention from opposing defenses to open things up for the 49ers’ offense and create more opportunities for big plays.

“Anytime you add Mike Evans to the outside, it’s not like they can really stuff the box, because at any moment, you can just throw a go ball,” tight end George Kittle shared. “So most corners are going to need help over the top. Hopefully, we’re not really playing with eight to nine guys in the box on every single snap. I think that’ll help.”

All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams is also excited to see what Evans can bring to the 49ers’ offense.

“I think Mike Evans is going to be the biggest benefactor for us,” Williams told ESPN. “Just because you can’t have your safeties keyed in on filling the gaps. Because you can’t leave him 50-50, you can’t leave him one-on-one. And that’s the one thing that this offense, in my opinion, didn’t do as much, was attack downfield.”

In addition to signing Evans, the 49ers used their top draft pick on wide receiver De’Zhaun Stribling, who has stood out throughout training camp and the preseason. San Francisco also brought back Deebo Samuel and signed Christian Kirk, although Kirk has been unable to practice because of a calf strain, putting his roster status in question.

For the 49ers, the hope is that Evans can stay healthy and provide the downfield threat the offense has lacked. If he does, his presence could make life easier for the rest of San Francisco’s offensive weapons. However, Gagnon’s concerns highlight the biggest question surrounding the signing: whether Evans can remain healthy and productive at age 33.

The San Francisco 49ers made a splash in free agency by signing longtime Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver…

[30
1818,102109,1188,39909,299,90113,752,101,296,103,102,104,106,105
post-440446","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-san-francisco","tag-49ers","tag-christian-kirk","tag-de","tag-deebo-samuel","tag-kyle-shanahan","tag-mike-evans","tag-nfl","tag-san-francisco","tag-san-francisco-49ers","tag-san-francisco-headlines","tag-san-francisco-news","tag-sf","tag-sf-headlines","tag-sf-news
["GET
