SAN JOSE, Calif. \u2014\u00a0The San Jose Earthquakes announced today they have\u00a0acquired\u00a0German international midfielder Eduard L\u00f6wen from St. Louis CITY SC via trade for $425,000 in 2026 General Allocation Money (GAM) plus up to $500,000 in conditional GAM if certain performance-based incentives are met. One of the premier playmakers in Major League Soccer,\u00a0L\u00f6wen\u00a0has signed a new contract through the 2027-28 season and will be a Designated Player who is eligible to be bought down.\u00a0<\/p>\n

L\u00f6wen\u00a0is eligible to play\u00a0immediately, starting with Saturday\u2019s road match against the\u00a0Houston\u00a0Dynamo.\u00a0<\/p>\n

L\u00f6wen, 29, has established himself as an elite box-to-box midfielder and set-piece specialist in his three and a half seasons in MLS since joining St. Louis from the German Bundesliga, amassing 47 goal contributions\u201420 goals and 27 assists\u2014in 84 career league games (70 starts). This season, he has six goal contributions (3g\/3a) in 13 matches (eight starts), with the last of those assists coming just\u00a011 days\u00a0ago against the Earthquakes at PayPal Park. With his imposing 6\u20192\u2019\u2019\u00a0frame,\u00a0L\u00f6wen\u00a0is also an impact player on the defensive end; his aerial\u00a0duel\u00a0percentage has improved each season, with 2026 his highest success rate yet (71.4%).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Prior to signing with St. Louis\u00a0in 2022,\u00a0L\u00f6wen\u00a0played four seasons in the Bundesliga, amassing\u00a0seven\u00a0goals\u00a0and eight assists\u00a0in 80\u00a0league\u00a0appearances for\u00a01.\u00a0FC N\u00fcrnberg\u00a0(2017-19)\u00a0and\u00a0Hertha Berlin (2019-21), along with two loan spells at FC Augsburg (2019-20) and VfL Bochum (2020-21). He also played an\u00a0additional\u00a0two seasons in 2. Bundesliga with\u00a0FC N\u00fcrnberg (2016-18), amassing 43 league appearances and five goals and six assists.\u00a0A native of Idar-Oberstein, Germany, L\u00f6wen did his youth formation in the academies of\u00a0SV\u00a0Hottenbach\u00a0(2008), 1. FC Kaiserslautern (2008-15) and 1. FC Saarbr\u00fccken (2015\u201316).\u00a0<\/p>\n
