One of the premier playmakers in Major League Soccer,\u00a0L\u00f6wen\u00a0has signed a new contract through the 2027-28 season and will be a Designated Player who is eligible to be bought down.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEduard is a proven player in this league with the versatility and experience to make an impact\u00a0in\u00a0our midfield,\u201d said Earthquakes Sporting Director\/Head Coach Bruce Arena. \u201cBeyond what he brings on the field,\u00a0he\u2019s\u00a0a great person with strong character and leadership qualities.\u00a0We\u2019re\u00a0excited to have him in San Jose and look forward to welcoming him to the club.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>L\u00f6wen\u00a0is eligible to play\u00a0immediately, starting with Saturday\u2019s road match against the\u00a0Houston\u00a0Dynamo.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A separate media advisory with details for a press conference with\u00a0L\u00f6wen\u00a0and Arena to take place Thursday at 12:30 p.m. PT in the PayPal Park Media Room will be distributed shortly.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>L\u00f6wen, 29, has established himself as an elite box-to-box midfielder and set-piece specialist in his three and a half seasons in MLS since joining St. Louis from the German Bundesliga, amassing 47 goal contributions\u201420 goals and 27 assists\u2014in 84 career league games (70 starts). This season, he has six goal contributions (3g\/3a) in 13 matches (eight starts), with the last of those assists coming just\u00a011 days\u00a0ago against the Earthquakes at PayPal Park. He also played an\u00a0additional\u00a0two seasons in 2. Bundesliga with\u00a0FC N\u00fcrnberg (2016-18), amassing 43 league appearances and five goals and six assists.\u00a0A native of Idar-Oberstein, Germany, L\u00f6wen did his youth formation in the academies of\u00a0SV\u00a0Hottenbach\u00a0(2008), 1. FC Kaiserslautern (2008-15) and 1.
