(KFSN) &#8212; A new park is in the works for northwest Fresno, and the council member who represents the district wants to name it after a California politician whose roots and legacy run deep in the Central Valley.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Cruz Bustamante was born in Dinuba and attended Fresno State.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">He was elected to the State Assembly&#8217;s 31st district in 1993, representing Fresno and parts of the San Joaquin Valley.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Four years later, he became the first Latino State Assembly speaker.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">He was also elected lieutenant governor in 1998 under then-Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC eTIW sUzSN \">While the park is still in the design phase, council member Mike Karbassi brought forward a resolution before the city council today to officially name the green space at Veterans Boulevard and Barstow &#8220;Cruz Bustamante Park.&#8221;<br class=\" \"\/><\/p>\n<p>Copyright \u00a9 2026 KFSN-TV.
