Hirving “Chucky” Lozano returns to Snapdragon Stadium on Saturday night with a new team and plenty of attention following him.

Marcus Ingvartsen, meanwhile, will be unavailable to San Diego FC because of a leg injury.

Their contrasting circumstances frame a rivalry match loaded with subplots, but the standings provide the most important one: SDFC and LA Galaxy enter the weekend separated by one point in the Western Conference playoff race.

San Diego hosts the Galaxy at 7:30 p.m. Saturday with both clubs sitting just outside the top nine. SDFC (7-8-6, 27 points) enters the weekend in 11th place. Los Angeles (6-8-8, 26) is 12th.

For San Diego, the match represents another opportunity to turn its recent success at Snapdragon Stadium into a postseason push. Mikey Varas’ team has won four consecutive home matches across all competitions and is unbeaten there since returning from the World Cup break.

The latest was perhaps its most complete performance of the season, a 3-0 victory against Colorado last Saturday in which Onni Valakari, Elias Achouri and Gabriel Pirani scored and goalkeeper CJ dos Santos recorded his third MLS shutout of the year.

“We have to keep pushing,” Varas said afterward. “We’re on a mission, and we’ve got to be relentless about it.”

That mission gets more complicated without Ingvartsen.

SDFC’s leading scorer suffered what Varas described as a minor leg injury late against Colorado after entering as a second-half substitute and assisting Pirani’s goal. Ingvartsen has 11 goals and five assists in MLS play this season.

While the injury is not considered significant, Ingvartsen will miss Saturday’s match. His absence leaves San Diego with several ways to reshape its front line.

Valakari started centrally against the Rapids. Lewis Morgan and Amahl Pellegrino have also played there. Varas could also move Anders Dreyer inside and surround him with two more vertical attackers.

“We have options,” Varas said. “They each bring something a little bit different in the position.”

Those options have expanded considerably since the summer transfer window.

Achouri, the Tunisian winger signed as the club’s third Designated Player, scored his first goal for the azul and chrome last week in his first home start. Pirani has scored in consecutive matches against Portland and Colorado.

Dreyer said Achouri’s ability to dribble, run behind defenses and finish gives SDFC another dimension, while Pirani has added creativity through the middle.

“It gives the team a lot of different ways of attacking,” Dreyer said.

That versatility could matter against a Galaxy team that Varas expects to pose a much different tactical problem than Colorado.

The Rapids tried to overwhelm San Diego with pressure. The Galaxy are generally more patient, willing to protect space and wait for mistakes. Their speed, particularly through Joseph Paintsil, can turn one careless SDFC turnover into a dangerous counterattack within seconds.

“We have to be really good in our counter prevention, clean on the ball,” Varas said. “We need to be sharp.”

San Diego has shown signs of improvement in that area.

SDFC controlled possession for long stretches in a 3-1 loss at Portland on Aug. 19 but repeatedly left itself vulnerable when attacks broke down. Three days later against Colorado, its structure behind the ball was noticeably stronger and its reactions after turnovers more aggressive.

Varas said San Diego is defending the space behind its attack better, competing more consistently in duels and improving in transition.

The Galaxy arrive with personnel issues of their own. Starting goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski is suspended after receiving a red card in last week’s 2-2 draw at CF Montréal, leaving Novak Mićović as the likely replacement. Los Angeles has won just once in its past seven matches across all competitions and is winless in its past three on the road.

Then there is Lozano.

Three weeks after SDFC loaned its former marquee player to a Southern California rival, Lozano will walk back into Snapdragon Stadium wearing Galaxy colors.

Lozano was San Diego’s first Designated Player and, for much of the club’s inaugural season, its most recognizable face.

His second season unfolded very differently. After a breakdown with the club, he spent months outside the first-team picture before SDFC sent him to the Galaxy on Aug. 7.

Now the reunion comes almost immediately.

Lozano has appeared three times for Los Angeles, starting once, while rebuilding his match fitness after an extended absence. Whether he starts Saturday or comes off the bench, his first touch should provide an early indication of how Snapdragon Stadium intends to receive him.

The response could be complicated.

Some supporters will remember the excitement surrounding his arrival and his role in SDFC’s inaugural season. Others may be less forgiving about how his time in San Diego ended — or about seeing him reappear with a rival fighting SDFC for the same playoff position.

Varas hopes the reception leans toward the former.

“We all are happy that he’s playing football again,” Varas said. “We still want the best for him. It was just a matter of not being the right fit.”

His players have been similarly diplomatic.

Dreyer said there is “no bad vibe” toward his former teammate.

San Diego Football Club’s, Anibal Godoy (20) faces Colorado Rapids goalkeeper, Nicolas Hansen (41) during Saturday’s MLS match against the Colorado Rapids at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, CA. (Xavier Hernandez for the UT)

Veteran midfielder and team leader Aníbal Godoy, whose family remains close with Lozano’s family, kept the focus on the competition.

“He’s a great person, a great player,” Godoy said. “But right now, he defends the Galaxy jersey, and we defend the San Diego jersey.”

That distinction may be all the Snapdragon crowd needs.

Once the ball starts moving, Lozano will no longer be the former face of SDFC.

He will simply be another Galaxy attacker standing between San Diego and three badly needed points.

SDFC has won both previous meetings with the Galaxy and is 3-0-1 all-time against the two Los Angeles clubs. It also beat LAFC 1-0 at BMO Stadium earlier this month.

San Diego’s brief but successful history against its Los Angeles rivals adds another layer to Saturday.

The standings carry considerably more weight.
