Cole brought The Fall-Off World Tour to Oakland Arena on Saturday for the first of two Bay Area shows, just days after the death of a touring crew member forced the cancelation of the rapper’s Sacramento concert.

J. Cole
DJ Nitrane, Bas
8 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 30
Oakland Arena, Oakland
Tickets: $46 and up.

The Oakland stop marked Jermaine Lamarr Cole’s first Bay Area performance since 2021, when he played the same room with 21 Savage on The Off-Season Tour. The North Carolina rapper performed more than 30 songs over roughly two hours, drawing from across his career while leaning heavily on his seventh studio album, The Fall-Off.

Rather than appearing directly onstage, Cole entered through the arena crowd.

The lights went down as Boyz II Men’s “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday” played over the speakers and a spotlight moved across the packed arena. It eventually landed on Cole, seated in Section 104.

He began with the reflective “39 Intro,” an acoustic-driven song about returning to his hometown. Cole was masterful at changing moods and tempo through his music and lyrical delivery.

“Bay Area!” he shouted before launching into his familiar “YEAH-YEAH-YEAH” chant. The crowd responded as he moved into high-energy hometown anthem “Two Six,” making his way down the section stairs and through the crowd and toward the stage, high-fiving fans along the way.

J. Cole spent the opening stretch focused on The Fall-Off, performing the album’s first six tracks in sequence before returning to another eight songs from the record later in the show.

The stage design rooted the performance firmly in his North Carolina history.

A recreation of Fayetteville’s historic Market House dominated the backdrop, rendered as a two-story red-brick building with white trim and a glowing clock tower. Evergreen trees and bushes surrounded the structure, while a band performed beneath it. An early-2000s Honda Civic was also raised and lowered throughout the show, referencing the car the rapper used during his early touring days.

From there, the set moved into older material including “A Tale of 2 Citiez” and “Fire Squad” from 2014 Forest Hills Drive.

Red lighting and a haunting repetitive loop gave “A Tale of 2 Citiez” a tense atmosphere as J. Cole shifted between perspectives on poverty, ambition and inner-city life. “Fire Squad” brought a more aggressive delivery, with Cole moving through changing cadences as he addressed competition and status within hip-hop.

North Carolina remained a recurring theme.

“My mission on this tour, everywhere I go: I’m trying to bring the ‘Ville with me,” he said during “Old Dog,” referencing his label and brand.

He then asked the Oakland crowd to represent Carolina while waving The Fall-Off towels that had been hung on every chair in the building ahead of the show.

Petey Pablo’s “Raise Up” followed, functioning as a North Carolina anthem within the set.

“Who am I!” Cole shouted.

The closing stretch included “Wet Dreamz,” “G.O.M.D.” and “Love Yourz.”

“Wet Dreamz” leaned heavily on call-and-response, while “G.O.M.D.” paired a hard-hitting beat with Cole’s shifting cadence and a reference to Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz’ “Get Low.”

“Love Yourz” slowed the pace, with Cole delivering the refrain “no such thing as a life that’s better than yours” in a conversational, grounded tone.

J. Cole concluded with “No Role Modelz” and “Quick Stop.” The former brought another arena-wide call-and-response as Cole worked the stage with the microphone stand, marching back and forth and repeatedly crouching with the rhythm.

The closer began with guitar, strings and vocals before the rapper accelerated into a faster cadence. He maintained the rapid flow for several minutes as the song continued to build.

The band finished with “The Fall Off is Inevitable…”

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="100" height="150" src="https://www.newsbeep.com/us-ca/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/keem-115-100x150.jpg" class="attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail" alt="J. That crash led to the cancelation of Thursday’s Golden 1 Center concert. By Saturday night in Oakland, however, the tour was back onstage.

        About The Author

                    Glenn Gumin

Glenn Gumin spends his days on a college campus as a higher education administrator involved in academic affairs and student & financial services.
