After a thrilling victory on Friday night<\/a>, the Phillies sent their ace to the mound in search of another series win.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Cristopher Sanchez took the mound looking to continue to build his case for a National League Cy Young Award, bouncing back from a rough slate in July. In August, the Phillies’ ace had returned to form but was looking for another dominant start to improve his resume.<\/p>\n

Sanchez accomplished his mission.<\/p>\n

Tossing seven scoreless innings, the left-hander allowed just two hits all night to a lowly Angels’ lineup. He struck out eight batters and allowed just one walk.<\/p>\n

Sanchez accumulated his 200th strikeout of the season and has now surpassed this threshold in each of the last two seasons. He joins teammate Jesus Luzardo in that accomplishment.<\/p>\n

When Sanchez exited the ballgame, he left with a 1-0 lead. The Phillies offense had a much easier task in facing the Angels’ starter Ryan Johnson but was unable to take advantage.<\/p>\n

Johnson walked five batters in five innings of work. Philadelphia only managed to tag him for one run, which came in the top of the first inning.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Despite heavy traffic all night, the Phillies offense could not strike<\/a> with runners in scoring position.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In the bottom of the eighth, the Phillies handed the game over to Jonathan Bowlan, who had earned a save just the night prior. Bowlan looked sharp but allowed a game-tying solo home run to Los Angeles’ shortstop Zach Neto. Neto, whose name was rumored to be a player of interest at the trade deadline, showcased why he is one of the better young shortstops in Major League Baseball.<\/p>\n

Jhoan Duran entered in the ninth for the Phillies to keep the ballgame tied. Not only did Duran send the game to extras, but he came back out in the bottom of the tenth. The Phillies closer earned a win after the club scored three runs in the top of the frame, allowing their closer to shut the door.<\/p>\n

With the postseason nearing, it was an excellent time for manager Don Mattingly to try out his closer in a multi-inning situation. Even though the Angels did score the extra runner in the inning, Duran lowered his season<\/a> ERA to 1.64.<\/p>\n

He is 2-4 on the season with 28 saves in 51 appearances.<\/p>\n

With their 4-2 win, the Phillies improved their record to 76-60 and are a season-high 16 games above .500.<\/p>\n
