{"id":448593,"date":"2026-08-31T05:11:02","date_gmt":"2026-08-31T05:11:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/448593\/"},"modified":"2026-08-31T05:11:02","modified_gmt":"2026-08-31T05:11:02","slug":"sanger-west-tackles-hunger-before-fowler-game","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/448593\/","title":{"rendered":"Sanger West tackles hunger before Fowler game"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Sanger West 2.jpg\"   width=\"1200\" height=\"674\" title=\"The Sanger West football players volunteer to pack bell peppers at the Central California Food Bank.\" alt=\"The Sanger West football players volunteer to pack bell peppers at the Central California Food Bank.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>        The Sanger West football players volunteer to pack bell peppers at the Central California Food Bank.<\/p>\n<p>                Natalie Worstein<\/p>\n<p>The Sanger West High football team gave back to the community this week while preparing for its game against Fowler.<\/p>\n<p>The Hornets launched the Central Valley Gridiron Challenge, calling on other football programs to join the fight against hunger.<\/p>\n<p>On Aug. 26, more than 40 players volunteered at the Central California Food Bank from 8 to 10:30 a.m.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we\u2019re trying to do is obviously we want to be involved in the community,\u201d Sanger West coach Rob Thompson said. \u201cWe learned that one in every four people in the community struggles with hunger. \u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Hornets volunteered at the food bank\u2019s warehouse near Highway 99 and Amendola Drive, where they packed nearly 10,000 pounds of bell peppers.<\/p>\n<p>Thompson said Sanger West is challenging Sanger and McLane to do the same.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt makes a huge difference in our community,\u201d Thompson said. \u201cThat\u2019s more food they can get out; more people they can help. We\u2019re trying to get the ball rolling. We\u2019re blessed to be a part of something, so we need to make sure we give back and understand that it\u2019s bigger than playing football.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sanger West 54, Fowler 6<\/p>\n<p>The Hornets rolled to victory behind senior running back Khyliel Conway Muhammad, who ran for 350 yards and five touchdowns, breaking a school record.<\/p>\n<p>Sanger West totaled 430 yards with an uptempo offense that wore down the Redcats.<\/p>\n<p>The Hornets were coming off a 20-7 loss to Washington Union in the season opener.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe changed up some things offensively to kind of see what we needed to do,\u201d Thompson said. \u201cIt\u2019s made a huge difference for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>                                          <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Sanger West 1.jpg\"   width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" title=\"Sanger West 1.jpg\" alt=\"The Sanger West football players volunteer to pack bell peppers at the Central California Food Bank.\"\/>                                                                                    The Sanger West football players volunteer to pack bell peppers at the Central California Food Bank.
