Despite a year of challenges, our workforce delivered 3 million+ trips a month<\/p>\n
OAKLAND,
\nCalif. \u2013 For the Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District (AC Transit), this Labor
\nDay marks more than a three-day weekend or the unofficial end of summer. It is
\nan opportunity to recognize our workers, especially during what has been an
\nexceptionally challenging year for the transit industry.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe
\nwork our employees do every day may not always feel like a milestone in the
\nmoment. But that is how milestones are made: one task completed, one challenge
\nsolved, and one shift at a time,\u201d said Board of Directors President Diane Shaw.
\n\u201cOver the course of a year, those individual efforts become something much
\nbigger.\u201d<\/p>\n
Those
\nefforts can be seen across every corner of AC Transit: cleaning and fueling a
\nfleet of more than 500 buses overnight, driving congested streets while looking
\nout for students and riders with disabilities, troubleshooting mechanical
\nproblems in the middle of service, building smarter digital tools, turning
\nhours worked into accurate paychecks, and taking on countless other responsibilities
\nmost riders will never see.<\/p>\n
Since
\nlast Labor Day, those individual efforts have added up to something much
\nbigger. Our employees have helped deliver more than 3 million rides each month
\nto work, medical appointments, and other essential destinations, along with
\n30,000 daily school trips. <\/p>\n
\u201cTogether,
\nour employees helped propel AC Transit to its first three consecutive months of
\nyear-over-year ridership growth in the post-pandemic era. All while our transit
\ndistrict adjusted to internal cost-cutting and a projected $200 million
\nstructural deficit over the next four years,\u201d said General Manager-CEO Salvador
\nLlamas. \u201cDespite the financial pressures facing our transit district, our
\nemployees are working hard to keep East Bay communities connected.\u201d<\/p>\n
This
\nLabor Day, we wanted to introduce you to just some of AC Transit\u2019s team of
\ntalent, including Journey Level Mechanic John J., whose mother built a career
\nwith AC Transit and encouraged her mechanically curious son to apply.
\nThirty-four years later, John is still solving complex mechanical problems and
\nenjoying the variety that first drew him to AC Transit.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou
\nnever know what needs to be fixed. You never know what happened to a bus. So,
\nthe change every day was best for me because it never became repetitive.\u201d<\/p>\n
Senior
\nTransportation Supervisor Alexandria P. grew up riding AC Transit, relying on
\nsupplementary bus service and the many other lines that crisscrossed East
\nOakland. She has turned those same roads into a 12-year career of service that
\nbegan behind the wheel as a Bus Operator. And although her uniform has changed,
\nher smile has not.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe
\nhave a lot of people who are going through so much in life. And you and your
\nsmile uplift them out of a situation. I have people tell me all the time, \u2018You
\ndon\u2019t know that you just made my day.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
Training
\nInstructor Brenda N. began her career 36 years ago. Since then, technology has
\nchanged, the buses have changed, and the world has changed, but her commitment
\nto riders never did. Through it all, she says one thing has remained constant:
\nAC Transit is family.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe
\noperators, the dispatchers, and the superintendents\u2026are \u00a0just one big happy family. I always felt like
\nno matter what was happening in my personal life, I always had an outlet when
\nit came to my job.\u201d<\/p>\n
Andrei
\nP. is one of AC Transit\u2019s newer hires, but his connection goes back much
\nfurther. An East Bay native who grew up riding AC Transit, Andrei left the
\nadvertising agency world to bring his creative experience home to AC Transit.
\nToday, he leads our graphic design team. So, when you step aboard a bus, you\u2019re
\nstepping into some of their work.<\/p>\n
\u201cAll
\nthe signs and printed materials you see onboard our buses\u2026 our team created
\nthem, along with digital graphics that appear in stadiums.\u201d<\/p>\n
This
\nLabor Day and throughout September, we invite you to join AC Transit to show a
\nlittle extra appreciation. When you encounter one of our employees, take a
\nmoment to offer a heartfelt \u201cthank you\u201d for the work they do each day to keep
