{"id":452727,"date":"2026-09-04T00:28:09","date_gmt":"2026-09-04T00:28:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/452727\/"},"modified":"2026-09-04T00:28:09","modified_gmt":"2026-09-04T00:28:09","slug":"ndsu-soccer-blanks-westmont-to-begin-california-trip","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/452727\/","title":{"rendered":"NDSU Soccer Blanks Westmont to Begin California Trip"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SANTA BARBARA, Calif. \u2013 North Dakota State soccer opened up its first road trip of the season with a 2-0 win Thursday afternoon over Westmont at Thorrington Field.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nThe Bison dominated early, outnumbering the Warriors 13-1 in shots in the opening half, forcing a couple key saves early in the match. <a href=\"https:\/\/gobison.com\/sports\/womens-soccer\/roster\/hannah-arnold\/24369\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"24369\" target=\"_blank\">Hannah Arnold<\/a> would eventually find the breakthrough and put the Bison in front in the 26th minute.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/gobison.com\/sports\/womens-soccer\/roster\/gabrielle-garrett\/24375\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"24375\" target=\"_blank\">Gabrielle Garrett<\/a> started the scoring chance on the opening goal, making a run down the right wing and sending a cross into the box. <a href=\"https:\/\/gobison.com\/sports\/womens-soccer\/roster\/morgan-russmann\/24381\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"24381\" target=\"_blank\">Morgan Russmann<\/a> then made a flick on the cross and Arnold headed the ball across the line for her first of the season. Russmann&#8217;s assist moved her into a tie with Arnold and three others for ninth in NDSU&#8217;s Division I era at 10.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n87 seconds later, Russmann would double the Bison lead with her team-leading third goal of the season. <a href=\"https:\/\/gobison.com\/sports\/womens-soccer\/roster\/tyreese-zacher\/24386\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"24386\" target=\"_blank\">Tyreese Zacher<\/a> played a ball up to Russmann, who headed the ball past her defender and out paced her for a breakaway attempt. Russmann then worked past the Westmont goalkeeper and found an open net to move into a tie for fifth in goals in NDSU&#8217;s Division I era, matching Quin Ryan with 20 career goals.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nThe Bison would create several more quality chances, including <a href=\"https:\/\/gobison.com\/sports\/womens-soccer\/roster\/mirabelle-keselman\/24616\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"24616\" target=\"_blank\">Mirabelle Keselman<\/a> forcing a diving save late in the first and <a href=\"https:\/\/gobison.com\/sports\/womens-soccer\/roster\/abby-desena\/24623\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"24623\" target=\"_blank\">Abby DeSena<\/a> hitting the post in the second half with two of the closest opportunities to extend the lead.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nNDSU finished with 19 shots to just two for Westmont, who were unable to get a shot off from inside the penalty area in the contest. The shutout is the second straight for <a href=\"https:\/\/gobison.com\/sports\/womens-soccer\/roster\/payton-mulberry\/24377\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"24377\" target=\"_blank\">Payton Mulberry<\/a> and the Bison, and the third in the last four games. It is the 10th career cleansheet for Mulberry, moving her into a tie for seventh in NDSU&#8217;s all-time history.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nNorth Dakota State will continue its stay in Santa Barbara, California this week, taking on UC Santa Barbara on Sunday.
