While it is not the region’s largest carrier — that distinction belongs to Southwest Airlines — it claims the largest number of nonstop destinations.

“As San Diego’s airline, we’re proud to offer more nonstop destinations from San Diego than any other airline and to be the leading carrier serving Mexico from the market,” said Darren Scott, Alaska’s managing director of network. “Launching our 50th nonstop destination from San Diego as we celebrate 40 years of serving the region is a meaningful way to thank our guests for choosing Alaska and Hawaiian and trusting us to connect them to the places they want to go.”

The latest nonstop coincides with a 40th anniversary celebration that will include a major giveaway. Forty individuals will receive Alaska’s Atmos Rewards Gold status for 40 years, and one grand-prize winner will receive 1 million Atmos Rewards points that can be used across Alaska Airlines’ global network. The loyalty program also applies to flights on Hawaiian Airlines, which Alaska acquired in 2024.

The airline, in its Thursday announcement, said that travelers can expect still more giveaways and celebrations throughout the year.

“We’re proud to be San Diego’s leading airline, with deep roots in the community, the most extensive network, and the only carrier with both a pilot and flight attendant base in the region,” said Neil Thwaites, vice president of global sales and California commercial performance at Alaska Airlines. “Some of the employees who helped launch our first flight from San Diego are still with Alaska today, a testament to their dedication and to our enduring commitment to this community. As we celebrate 40 years in San Diego, we’re grateful to our employees and loyal guests who choose Alaska every day.”

The anniversary celebration comes at a time when Alaska is upping its financial investment in San Diego. The airline plans to begin work next year on its first airline lounge here. The project involves more than doubling the size of an existing lounge in Terminal 2 East that is currently operated by Aspire and open to any airport customer as long as space is available. The new Alaska venue is expected to open in 2028.

San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria said Thursday that he expects the new flight to Loreto will lead to stronger connections with Mexico.

“I’m grateful,” he said in a statement, “for Alaska’s continued investment in San Diego and look forward to building on this partnership for many years to come.”

Later this year, San Diego International Airport will get its first nonstop flight to Loreto, Mexico, thanks to…

[28
387,181,74,76,75,1696,5277
post-453167","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-san-diego","tag-business","tag-latest-headlines","tag-san-diego","tag-san-diego-headlines","tag-san-diego-news","tag-top-stories-sdut","tag-tourism
["GET
