The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says symptoms of severe illness <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/west-nile-virus\/signs-symptoms\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">can include<\/a> high fever, headache, neck stiffness, disorientation, muscle weakness and paralysis.<\/p>\n<p> Health Department Steps Up Surveillance <\/p>\n<p>Okada said the Health Department has enhanced disease surveillance and continues to work with regional vector-control agencies to monitor mosquito activity and reduce mosquito populations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This integrated approach allows our public health and Vector Control teams to use current human case and mosquito activity data to identify areas of concern and guide response efforts,&#8221; Okada told Patch.<\/p>\n<p>The city is also urging residents to take precautions themselves. &#8220;The Long Beach Health Department has experienced public health and Vector Control teams, established surveillance systems and response protocols in place to closely monitor West Nile virus activity and respond as conditions change,&#8221; Okada said. &#8220;I am confident in our teams and the systems we have in place, but protecting our community from West Nile virus is a shared effort.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We need residents to do their part by taking precautions to prevent mosquito bites and eliminating standing water around their homes,&#8221; he added. &#8220;By working together, we can help reduce the risk of West Nile virus and protect the health of our community.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"That severe neurological illness is known as neuroinvasive disease.
