The bystander was waiting in line at the drive-through when she heard the driver in front of her yelling through the window, she said in the video.<\/p>\n\u201cHe gets out of his car, and he jumps through the window like he\u2019s Spider-Man moves or, like, does this Jackie Chan move feet-first through the window,\u201d she said in the video. \u201cAnd he starts battling this lady with a stick, who she had chased, I guess, all the staff into some back room.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThis kid, like, totally saved the day,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n
The man, Luca Opperman, 20, said in an interview that the incident happened around 1 a.m. Wednesday. He placed his order and drove to the second window to pick up his food when he heard \u201cthis super loud banging noise.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI look up and just see this lady, she has this baseball bat-sized stick, basically like a tree branch, and she\u2019s overhead smashing it on top of a counter,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Opperman yelled at the woman to get out of the restaurant, but she instead opened the folding latch separating the lobby from the kitchen and started walking toward the employees who were in the back, he said.<\/p>\n
He then jumped through the window and grabbed the first thing he saw: a spatula. \u201cThinking about it now, I probably would have been better off with a fryer basket, but it happened so fast,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He said the woman swung the stick at him as he wielded the spatula. At one point, she briefly turned away, prompting him to \u201cgo in with a shoulder check\u201d and grab the stick from her, he said.<\/p>\n
Riverside County Sheriff\u2019s deputies then responded, found the woman outside of the restaurant and detained her without incident, according to Lt. Deirdre Vickers, a sheriff\u2019s public information officer. No injuries were reported.<\/p>\n
The woman, Antonieta Sanchez, 53, of Redlands, was booked into the Southwest Detention Center on suspicion of felony vandalism and brandishing a weapon, Vickers wrote in an email.<\/p>\n
Opperman is a college student who also does freestyle trampolining and used to teach parkour and play rugby. He credited those skills with helping him jump through the window and disarm the woman quickly.<\/p>\n
He also used to work in fast food, which is what drove him to intervene, he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI know In-N-Out employees get paid decent, but they don\u2019t get paid well enough to get attacked by a crazy lady with a stick,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s something where I\u2019ve got to stand up for my fellow brothers, that type of feeling.\u201d<\/p>\n
The video of the confrontation has drawn more than 64,000 likes, with many commenters praising Opperman as a small-town hero.<\/p>\n
In-N-Out also commended the student\u2019s actions. \u201cWe are thankful that one of our customers bravely intervened to ensure the safety of everyone nearby,\u201d chief operating officer Denny Warnick wrote in a statement. \u201cWe applaud his selflessness and quick thinking, and we\u2019ve been able to share our gratitude with him.\u201d<\/p>\n
Still, Opperman remained humble. \u201cEverything I\u2019ve read has been positive, it\u2019s all been like I did a good job, people asking me if I\u2019ve taken karate or martial arts,\u201d he said. \u201cBut I feel like what I did was more being in the right place at the right time.\u201d<\/p>\n
