\u201cIt was around 6:30 when I said to my wife, \u2018Hey, honey, I’m going to go close up the cabana and I’ll come back here and meet with you.\u2019 I went and closed the cabana and came back, and that’s when the tornado hit, which was right around like 6:40, 6:45,\u201d Guerreiro said. \u201cMy two younger kids were with my wife. They had made their way down to the clubhouse. My older son was with a group of kids dropping something off at another family’s locker. And the lockers is where the tornado actually touched down. And so thankfully they got themselves into a locker. They were able to, you know, protect themselves from the strength of while the storm then came through. And it was there and then gone within 30 seconds.\u201d <\/p>\n
As the family drove home from Sun and Surf, Guerreiro said they saw a procession of emergency vehicles and first responders rushing in the direction of the club. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt was a scary moment when it touched down because you had the damage, you had this unprecedented weather event from Long Island,\u201d Guerreiro said. \u201cI think everyone, when we left the club, we thought, \u2018well, that’s a crazy end of the season.\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n
In this case, it was not the softball season that Guerreiro thought would be on hold, but the beach club\u2019s entire season. <\/p>\n
\u201cI don’t think any of us thought that we would be able to get back on the field. It’s an incredible credit to the club, [to] their ability to clean it up, to be resilient and not have a storm completely break them,\u201d Guerreiro said. \u201cThey could have easily said, \u2018We\u2019re packing in the season.\u2019 Not just the softball season, they could have told members, \u2018We’re going to close things down.
