{"id":454001,"date":"2026-09-05T02:14:08","date_gmt":"2026-09-05T02:14:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/454001\/"},"modified":"2026-09-05T02:14:08","modified_gmt":"2026-09-05T02:14:08","slug":"hundreds-of-flights-delayed-at-san-diego-airport-after-weather-balloon-and-drone-spotted-san-diego-union-tribune","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/454001\/","title":{"rendered":"Hundreds of flights delayed at San Diego airport after weather balloon and drone spotted \u2013 San Diego Union-Tribune"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hundreds of flights were delayed Friday at San Diego International Airport after a drone and weather balloon were spotted in the immediate vicinity around 2 p.m., airport officials said.<\/p>\n<p>Airport personnel confirmed to the Union-Tribune that one object was a drone while the second was identified as a weather balloon.<\/p>\n<p>In response, the Federal Aviation Administration temporarily paused arrivals and departures just as people were traveling for the Labor Day weekend, causing some flights to be delayed by about two hours, according to an advisory on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fly.faa.gov\/fly\/flyfaa\/flyfaaindex?ARPT=SAN&amp;p=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">its website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>By 4:30 p.m. the FAA reported an all-clear and all airport operations resumed.<\/p>\n<p>More than 400 flights had been delayed in San Diego by 5 p.m., according to FlightAware, which tracks flights across the country.<\/p>\n<p>According to the FAA, drone operators must receive an airspace authorization prior to operating near airports in controlled airspace. Further, the FAA advises drone operators to avoid flying near airports \u201cbecause it is difficult for manned aircraft to see and avoid a drone while flying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>San Diego\u2019s Airfield Operations continues to monitor the situation in close coordination with the FAA, TSA, and local law enforcement.
