A slow build like that either becomes an excuse or an education. For Weaver it became the latter.

“We’ve got to start faster and obviously that part of it is on me for sure,” said Weaver. “Just getting the chains going, getting first downs; that’s a big deal.”

The mistakes kept piling up for the Spartans too, just like the San Jose State sideline-keyboard-fan-critics on social media.

San Jose State finished with 13 penalties for 100 yards, five of them for 45 yards in the second quarter alone, on top of an intercepted pass and a fumble that Eastern Michigan turned directly into seven points.

None of it was pretty. Receiver Cooper Hoch called it exactly what it was.

“That’s very relieving,” Hoch said of trusting Sinatra in that spot. “He’s been out there visualizing his kicks after every practice and we put all of our trust into him.”

That is the sound of a team that has already decided who it can count on before the moment arrives. Instead it tilted the other way.

San Jose State head coach Ken Niumatalolo pointed to stopping the run as the hinge of the whole night.

“We made a big emphasis to stop the run,” said Niumatalolo. “Being able to stop the run in the second-half allows us to pin our ears back against a really athletic quarterback. The Spartans also finished with 74 tackles, eight pass breakups and a defensive stand that closed the door on Eastern Michigan’s last four possessions.

Linebacker Dylan Lee, who delivered a fourth quarter interception, put the whole approach into one phrase.

“It’s just next man up mentality,” said Lee. “Someone goes down; next man has got to step up and I felt like we did that really well today.”

The numbers behind the nerve

Strip away the theater and the production still holds up.

Weaver finished 23 of 41 for 316 yards and three touchdowns, all three on go-ahead or answer-back drives.

Bates carried 20 times for 119 yards and added 13 more receiving, wearing down a defense that had no answer for him late.

Six different receivers caught a pass, led by Hoch’s five catches for 115 yards and two scores, with Carson Clark, Jerry McClure, Jase Nix and Jordan Anderson all chipping in explosive gains.

That’s not one hero carrying a team.
