Newsom hails federal judge’s mail-in voting ruling as a ‘major win for democracy’ in California<\/p>\n

California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Friday hailed a federal judge’s decision to extend a block on the U.S. Postal Service’s implementation of President Donald Trump’s executive order on mail-in voting. <\/p>\n

The executive order would have placed the federal government in charge of mailed ballots, as legal challenges continue less than two months before the midterm elections. <\/p>\n

Newsom called Friday’s preliminary injunction, which replaced the judge’s earlier, temporary order, \u201ca major win for democracy.\u201d <\/p>\n

The Trump administration is asking the Supreme Court to allow the U.S. Postal Service to carry out the president\u2019s plan. Trump\u2019s proposal would require states to submit lists of eligible voters to the Postal Service, which has stated it would not deliver ballots if the names on them do not match the submitted lists. <\/p>\n

California Secretary of State Shirley Weber also responded to the ruling, saying, \u201cWhile the preliminary injunction is an important victory for California voters and election officials, this fight is far from over.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cMy office is working around the clock to ensure all eligible voters in California can cast their ballots this November and beyond. Voting is a fundamental right – California will continue to defend it,\u201d Weber said.<\/p>\n
