Police early Saturday moved in on a large street takeover in a Harbor Gateway neighborhood that has been plagued with the dangerous sideshows this summer, as the scene turned into what one official called a \u201cdemolition derby\u201d of drivers trying to flee.<\/p>\n

Video shows multiple officers surrounding a large group of people in the intersection of South Figueroa Street and West Alondra Boulevard around 3:30 a.m., with vehicles stopped or abandoned in the roadway.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey became their own little demolition derby, banging into each other trying to escape the arrests,\u201d Los Angeles City Councilmember Tim McOsker, who represents the 15th District, said in an interview with freelance news videographer OnScene.TV. A truck could be seen towing cars behind him.<\/p>\n

Home security camera footage captured young people running through the neighborhood, with some jumping over a wall into a resident\u2019s backyard.<\/p>\n

McOsker said police anticipated the takeover in that community over the holiday weekend.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is an area where, on many weekends, especially through the summer, there were street takeovers,\u201d McOsker said. \u201cAnd this being the first night of Labor Day weekend, LAPD was ready \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Officers shut down the intersection and prevented participants from leaving, McOsker said. Numerous vehicles involved were impounded, while drivers were arrested and booked.<\/p>\n

Two LAPD police buses stood nearby, ready to transport those arrested.<\/p>\n

Other participants were cited, and minors who had been recording the takeover were taken to a police station to be picked up by their parents, according to McOsker.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was a very large takeover that provides a great deal of damage to our city infrastructure. More importantly, it\u2019s a dangerous activity that disrupts our neighborhoods,\u201d McOsker said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have an apartment building just right around the corner and we have good families and folks who are trying to live their lives. Every single weekend this intersection was taken over by this illegal racing,\u201d he said. \u201cSo we\u2019re sticking up for especially for the families who need to live in our neighborhoods and live in peace.\u201d<\/p>\n

The intersection is near the Gardena city limits.<\/p>\n

LAPD Media Relations did not immediately have information Saturday morning on the number of arrests, citations or vehicles impounded because the operation was ongoing.<\/p>\n

Last month, the Los Angeles County Sheriff\u2019s Department detailed measures it has launched to combat the wave of street takeovers and associated crimes, saying it was working to \u201cidentify and hold organizers and participants accountable through arrests, vehicle impounds, citations and criminal prosecution.\u201d<\/p>\n

The LAPD has also formed a Street Racing Task Force.<\/p>\n
