Three people, including a 2-year-old boy, were shot during a celebration Saturday night in the backyard of a Fresno home.

Officers responded around 10:15 p.m. after receiving a ShotSpotter activation in the 3100 block of East Washington Avenue, near First Street, Fresno Police Lt. Justin Hoagland said.

The police helicopter spotted a black vehicle leaving the area at a high rate of speed and heading toward downtown. The 2-year-old child, who had been shot in the leg, was inside the vehicle. Hoagland said the child is in stable condition.

Officers found two additional shooting victims at the home. One victim was found in the backyard with serious injuries, while the other was in stable condition.

According to Hoagland, a celebration was taking place in the backyard when the alleged shooter got into an argument with someone and opened fire, striking the three victims.

The person police believe is responsible for the shooting has been detained, Hoagland said.

Officers are canvassing the area for surveillance video as they continue their investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Fresno Police Department at 559-621-7000.
