A mountain lion <\/a>was spotted on the streets of San Francisco,\u00a0triggering a quick response from Animal Care & Control Saturday night.<\/p>\n

The apex predator was hiding in a tree near Fell and Baker Streets when the city\u2019s animal control officers arrived at the scene Saturday in Panhandle near Golden Gate Park<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A person walking a dog had first noticed the lion climbing up a tree with dense foliage, making it easier for the animal to hide among the leaves, prompting San Francisco Animal Care & Control\u00a0to issue its first alert around 9:10 pm on Sept. 5<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Authorities cordoned off the Panhandle\u2019s northeast edge, closing Fell Street between Broderick and Central. Late Saturday, officials launched a drone and illuminated the canopy to locate the mountain lion, but didn\u2019t see it.<\/p>\n

Department of Fish and Wildlife spokesperson Krysten Kellum confirmed wardens never spotted the animal, suggesting it may have already fled before team members arrived, reported the San Francisco Chronicle<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Officials released safety guidance for residents who might encounter the big cat, warning everyone to back away slowly, keep dogs on a leash<\/a>, pick up children and never run under any circumstances.<\/p>\n

If the animal approaches, authorities advise making yourself look as large as possible by waving your arms, shouting and throwing objects toward it.<\/p>\n

Residents who spot the mountain lion are urged to contact Animal Care & Control directly at 415-554-9400, or to call 911 immediately if facing a life-safety emergency.<\/p>\n
