<\/p>\nFRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — A 1-year-old child and a 30-year-old man are both hospitalized following a shooting at a home in Central Fresno on Saturday night.<\/p>\n
According to Fresno Police, around 10:14 p.m., officers received reports of shots fired from a ShotSpotter activation in the area of Washington Avenue east of First Street.<\/p>\n
As officers headed to the area, they were notified that there were two victims who had been shot at a home on Washington Avenue.<\/p>\n
Once they arrived, officers learned the two victims had been driven to the hospital by family members.<\/p>\n
Officers say that the child was struck once in the leg with a non-life-threatening injury.<\/p>\n
The man was struck once in the lower body and was seriously injured but is expected to live.<\/p>\n
Both victims’ identities have not been released.<\/p>\n
The suspect, identified as 39-year-old Paul Benefield of Fresno, was found at the home with injuries to his face and head.<\/p>\n

Detectives learned that Benefield and the adult victim were attending a birthday party at the home when they got into an argument. Benefield took out a handgun and started shooting multiple times at the man.<\/p>\n
During the shooting, the toddler was hit by a bullet.<\/p>\n
Several other people attending the party attempted to stop Benefield and wrestle the gun away from him, causing injuries to his face and his head.<\/p>\n
Although Benefield was arrested, he is being treated at the hospital for his injuries.<\/p>\n
Fresno Police say once released from the hospital, he will be booked into the Fresno County Jail and charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon.<\/p>\n
The shooting remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Fresno Police Department.<\/p>\n
