Months later, that performance would help turn him into one of the biggest rock stars in the world.

The live version of “Do You Feel Like We Do” became a centerpiece of 1976’s Frampton Comes Alive!, the blockbuster double album that transformed Frampton’s career. Driven by extended guitar work and his famous talk box, the recording became a hit despite its extraordinary length and remains one of the defining live tracks of the ’70s.

The song itself wasn’t new.

Frampton had written “Do You Feel Like We Do” with bandmates Mick Gallagher, Rick Wills, and John Siomos, and originally recorded it for his 1973 studio album Frampton’s Camel.

“That was very interesting because that was when Frampton’s camel first got together for our very first American tour opening for whoever and I used to bring my reel-to-reel revox and two mics and I’d record everything we did when we would jam,” Frampton told Rick Beato in a 2024 interview. “So everyone we finished this jam and I don’t know what I played, everybody in the band said ‘Wind it back now, keep going— not there, no before that, before that, and then it was there. They said let’s make a song out of that so that’s how it happened.”

By the time he made Frampton Comes Alive!, however, years of performing the song had turned it into something far more elaborate.

That evolution was captured at Winterland.

“Well, as soon as we walked on the stage there’s like 7,500 people out there and I was like: ‘Oh my God!'” Frampton told Louder. “And I think it gave us such a kick up the are. We did this show that was one where you walk off and go: ‘Oh, wish we’d recorded that’. The only difference being that we actually did. So it was just very special.”

Much of Frampton Comes Alive! was assembled from concerts recorded at several venues in 1975, but “Do You Feel Like We Do” came from the June 14 show at Winterland Ballroom. The celebrated San Francisco venue had hosted many of rock’s biggest names, making it an appropriate setting for the performance that would become synonymous with Frampton.

Its most memorable moment came when his guitar appeared to speak.

Using a talk box, Frampton routed his guitar sound through a tube in his mouth, allowing him to shape it into vocal-like phrases. The effect turned the song into a conversation between performer and audience and quickly became one of his trademarks.

Released in January 1976, Frampton Comes Alive! became a phenomenon.

The album spent 10 nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and produced hit versions of “Show Me the Way” and “Baby, I Love Your Way.” An edited single of “Do You Feel Like We Do” also reached No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, an impressive feat for a performance whose album version runs nearly 14 minutes.

The album ultimately became Frampton’s career-defining release and one of the records most closely associated with the golden age of live rock albums.

“Frampton Comes Alive! is the album I’ll always be remembered for,” Frampton told Music Radar. “I’m very proud of the music that’s on it. Why it exploded the way it did and continues to live on are things that can’t fully be explained. But I’m extremely grateful to have touched so many people’s lives with it – then and now. I’ve got kids coming to shows with their parents and grandparents, and everybody knows the record by heart. We have a fantastic time, too! You can’t complain about that.”

Fifty years later, “Do You Feel Like We Do” still captures the electricity that made Frampton Comes Alive! extraordinary. What began as a 1973 studio track found its definitive form onstage in San Francisco †and helped turn one night at Winterland into rock history.

Related: 1968 Iconic Ballad by Richard Harris, Lasting Nearly 8 Minutes, Is Still a Powerful Hit 58 Years Later

This story was originally published by Parade on Sep 6, 2026, where it first appeared in the Entertainment section.
