SAN DIEGO \u2014 Maquena O’Callaghan<\/a> buried a 40th-minute penalty kick and Chloe Walls<\/a> went the full 90 minutes for her third clean sheet of the season as San Diego women’s soccer beat Cal State Bakersfield 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at Torero Stadium.<\/p>\n

The Toreros had the run of play from the opening whistle, outshooting the Roadrunners 18-7, taking four corners to two and holding 56% of possession.<\/p>\n

San Diego went after the visitors early. Ella Callanan<\/a> forced a save in the seventh minute and had a second attempt blocked in the 13th, and Lily Johnson<\/a> drew another stop in the 21st as the Toreros piled up an 11-4 edge in first-half shots.<\/p>\n

Their opening came from the penalty spot. A handball in the box in the 40th minute sent O’Callaghan to the line, and she drove a right-footed strike into the bottom left corner for her first goal of the season and a lead San Diego carried into the break.<\/p>\n

“Every day [we do] ‘Match Day Minus 1’,” O’Callaghan said. “We take PK’s over and over. I always make sure I keep going until I make it. My goalies also prepare me very well, so shout out to them.”<\/p>\n

That preparation was also seen by the coaching staff.<\/p>\n

“When we did finally break through with the PK, Maquena was so confident, she just grabbed the ball,” head coach Greg LaPorte<\/a> said. “We’ve seen her take PK’s in practice and they’ve been pretty elite. So I was happy and confident in that one.”<\/p>\n

Tamia Graham<\/a> kept the pressure on after halftime with three of her match-high four shots, and Elise Miller<\/a> and Madeline Roder<\/a> both got looks in the second half, Roder’s coming off a Torero corner in the 81st minute. San Diego added seven more shots and two more corners over the final 45.<\/p>\n

At the other end there was very little to answer. Cal State Bakersfield managed just one shot on goal across the 90 minutes, and Walls gathered it in the final minute to seal the shutout. Kate Sealy<\/a> went the distance in the back for the Toreros, who used 20 players on the afternoon.<\/p>\n

“I was definitely pleased [with the win],” LaPorte said. “I wanted a little more out of this game, but pleased with our discipline. Our defensive structure was very sound, our game plan was good, and the team executed well. We felt like we were in complete control, like the pockets of space, we were pretty comfortable on the ball. I felt like we gave it away just a little bit too easy in the first half, but then once we hit our rhythm we’re pretty hard to break down.”
