Pocket bike riders took over Huntington Beach, and it ended with three adults in handcuffs, including two parents who police say encouraged their own kids to ride recklessly.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Huntington Beach Police Department<\/a> said in a Facebook post that officers responded to multiple calls on Sept. 5 about reckless driving after a large group of pocket bike riders entered the city. Most of the group fled before officers could make contact, but not everyone was so fast.<\/p>\n A handful of kids and adults stayed behind long enough for officers to make contact, leading to a string of arrests and citations.<\/p>\n Officers detained two juveniles riding pocket bikes, along with their mother, who police say knowingly allowed her kids to ride recklessly despite the risk of serious injury or death. She was arrested for child endangerment.<\/p>\n There Was More Action<\/p>\n During the crackdown, police took a man into custody after he fell from his pocket bike during the incident. Police arrested him for reckless driving and driving on a suspended license.<\/p>\n Officers were still working the scene when another juvenile arrived on his own pocket bike. Police say the juvenile’s father had encouraged the reckless riding and was arrested for contributing to the delinquency of a minor.<\/p>\n Two additional juvenile riders were cited and released without being taken into custody.<\/p>\n A Message<\/p>\n By the end of the operation, three adults were arrested, and multiple pocket bikes were impounded. The department said the response was meant to send a clear message that reckless riding won’t be dismissed as harmless fun.<\/p>\n “When driving\/riding becomes dangerous, people can get seriously hurt or worse,” the department said in its post. “We take that seriously, and so should you.”<\/p>\n Praise and Laughs<\/p>\n People online quickly noticed the shirt in the picture. One person joked that nothing says “tough guy” quite like a “Public Enemy Minibikes” shirt, comparing the look to something out of Sons of Anarchy, while thanking police for cracking down on what they called a genuine nuisance in the community.<\/p>\n Others suggested police could take a more constructive approach by helping riders organize a proper, safety-focused club so people could enjoy the hobby responsibly instead of just cracking down on it.<\/p>\n Another joked that an adult riding what looks like a toy-sized minicycle wasn’t exactly projecting the image he might have been going for.
