OAKLAND, Tenn. – The Mayor of Oakland, Tennessee, his son and several of his friends have been arrested and charged after damaging the mayor’s opponent’s political signs, court documents show.<\/p>\n
Mayor Adrian Wiggins was charged with criminal conspiracy to commit theft of property less than $1,000.\u00a0<\/p>\n
FOX13 obtained an Oakland Police Incident Report which shows that police pulled over three of the suspects on August 5, the day before Election Day.<\/p>\n
Police said one of them confessed to officers that Mayor Adrian Wiggins paid her to vandalize Chelsea Kivelle’s campaign signs.<\/p>\n
Wiggins and Kivelle were running against each other for the District 9 Commission seat in Fayette County, which Kivelle won.<\/p>\n
The suspect also told police that Wiggins told her to lie and deny everything about the incident if they got caught.<\/p>\n
Police said three signs were destroyed and 25 to 30 others were stolen.<\/p>\n
The suspects have been charged with misdemeanor theft and vandalism.<\/p>\n
