Fresno County prosecutors will soon be able to carry firearms on county property if they have a Concealed Carry Weapon (CCW) permit.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The Fresno County Board of Supervisors held the first hearing on the proposal on Tuesday, approving the ordinance and scheduling a second hearing.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Driving the news: Last month a Senior Deputy District Attorney was stabbed at Courthouse Park in downtown Fresno by Dustin Crawford, 42, who was arrested for attempted murder.\u00a0<\/p>\n
In response, Fresno County Supervisor Garry Bredefeld said he would propose an ordinance to allow prosecutors to protect themselves if they have CCW licenses.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The big picture: While Fresno County prohibits people from carrying firearms on county property, there are exceptions for sitting members of the board of supervisors, supervisor assistants, the county administrative officer and county counsel \u2013 if they have a CCW permit.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The ordinance adds the district attorney to the list, as well as prosecutors and special investigators in the District Attorney\u2019s Office who have a CCW permit and have been given authorization by the district attorney.\u00a0<\/p>\n
What we\u2019re watching: The ordinance will come back before the board on Sep. 22 for a second hearing.\u00a0<\/p>\n
If approved at that time, the ordinance will take effect 30 days later.\u00a0<\/p>\n
What they\u2019re saying: Fresno County District Attorney Lisa Smittcamp said her office is doing its best to heal after a rough few weeks, adding that the victim has returned to work.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are people that are in positions in homicide, in MAGEC \u2013 really just the status of downtown sadly makes us all vulnerable, but those people who prosecute those cases are exceptionally vulnerable to some of the violent people and the mentally ill people that we have roaming around in our communities,\u201d Smittcamp.\u00a0<\/p>\n
She said she has her life threatened twice a month, on average.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Fresno County Sheriff John Zanoni said prosecutors need to be protected.\u00a0<\/p>\n
