It’s a fitting name for the new restaurant; Marina Beach is located on Buchanan Street in the Marina, and is also a callback to where owner Murugan Gunasekaran’s family is from in South India. Leading the kitchen is chef Lucas Morris-Lopez, formerly of celebrated Mexico City restaurant Masala y Maiz. Marina Beach has grown from pop-up to permanent location, opening in June 2026, with a still-tough-to-score reservation even three months later.

The first thing one might notice about Marina Beach is the size. Located on the ground floor of a residential building, just a block from the Safeway, diners can immediately view the kitchen and its two-person team along with a few high-top tables nestled near the entrance. Four lucky diners get a front-row seat to the action of the kitchen from perches at the bar, and a side dining room squeezes in a few more guests near some street-facing windows. Marina Beach is already earning a reputation as a good date-night spot: The restaurant size is perfect for twosomes; the tradeoff, I’d dare say, is it’s not the best space for groups of more than four. (I might even say that a four-top is pushing it.) The scene is also date-coded thanks to tabletop candles and the dimly lit dining rooms. When paired with the minimalist concrete vibes of the space, Marina Beach feels cozy and cave-like. It’s great for an intimate dinner hang that isn’t too boisterous.

Much like the food menu, the drinks menu is brief and succinct. The wine list skews toward natural wines, with glasses in the $12 to $16 range and bottles topping out at about $60 or so, at least at this recent visit. My dining partner and I settled on a chablis from Thomas Tixier ($67), which offered a nice, bright contrast for our dinner. Other options include two vermouths — one from Partida Creus, the other from Scruffy (both $14 a glass) — and a single beer offering, Kingfish Lager ($8). Nonalcoholic offerings are sparse, but there, with a sparkling tea from Substance/s ($12), sparkling water ($7), and MB Cola ($5).

If you enjoy the music vibes during your dinner at Marina Beach, the restaurant has a fun way to keep the experience going: Spotify. The restaurant releases its playlists via a link on the restaurant website, giving diners access to all of the playlists, which is up to Volume 4 as of this writing.

If you want evidence of San Francisco’s ongoing bistro fixation, look no further than Marina Beach, a tiny…

[30
28829,101,103,102,104,106,105
post-457651","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-san-francisco","tag-dining-reports","tag-san-francisco","tag-san-francisco-headlines","tag-san-francisco-news","tag-sf","tag-sf-headlines","tag-sf-news
["GET
