September is a busy month in The Town \u2014 so busy we had a hard time choosing which events to feature. But we couldn\u2019t skip the Hyphy Function at Crybaby. (And don\u2019t miss out journalist Eric Arnold\u2019s two-part series<\/a> for The Oaklandside that celebrates the 20th anniversary of the hyphy movement\u2019s peak.)\u00a0<\/p>\n

Some events we couldn\u2019t fit in but are well worth checking out: a week-long run<\/a> of filmmaker Caron Creighton\u2019s documentary \u201cWood Street\u201d at The New Parkway; a rare concert<\/a> of Indian, Persian and Afghan classical music at the Oakland Asian Cultural Center on Friday, Sept. 11, and, the same night, the Amy D Quintet at The Sound Room<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Hot Ticket in The Town this week: The Hyphy Function <\/p>\n

This year marks two decades since the hyphy movement revolutionized the Bay Area, and the hyphy era\u2019s influence on Bay music never left. This Friday, DJs West Coast, MicahTron, and Mattyagi will be behind the turntable at Crybaby spinning classics and deep cuts from that era. Also, members of the artist collective Family Not A Group<\/a> will take over the venue\u2019s patio for a performance.

Oakland Public Library\u2019s Fruitvale Branch turns 60<\/p>\n

The C\u00e9sar E. Ch\u00e1vez Branch Library, originally called the Fruitvale Branch, was the first library in the U.S. dedicated to serving the Spanish-speaking community<\/a>. (The branch may eventually reclaim its original name, in the wake of<\/a> the sexual assault allegations against Ch\u00e1vez.) The original building was at 1457 Fruitvale Ave., until it moved to the Fruitvale Transit Village in 2004. This weekend, the branch is celebrating this milestone<\/a> with activities for the whole family, including live performances.

Bay Area Record Collectors meet up<\/p>\n

Bay Area Record Collectors<\/a> is a group of music and vinyl aficionados who get together periodically at a rotating roster of Bay Area record stores, then hang out to talk about music. The group will meet at 1-2-3-4 Go! Records<\/a>, then grab a drink and head over to Moving Records<\/a> on Piedmont Avenue.

Good Medicine Comedy at OMCA<\/p>\n

The all-Native comedy show Good Medicine, hosted and produced by Oakland-based comedian Jackie Keliiaa, is back at OMCA for a fourth year. This weekend\u2019s show includes sets by Brian Bahe, a writer for the CBS show \u201cGhosts\u201d; comedian and theatre actor Cheyenna Sapp; and Marc Yaffee, best known for the Showtime special, \u201cGoin\u2019 Native.\u201d The comedy show takes place outdoors in the museum\u2019s gardens.\u00a0

Oakland Chinatown Night Market<\/p>\n

According to the Oakland Chinatown Improvement Council, more than 10,000 attended last year\u2019s market. This year\u2019s event includes two stages with performances by Bay Area R&B singer\/songwriter Kiyomi, Taiwanese singer Niko Rain, and Oakland rapper Seiji Oda will perform with the legendary Oakkand rap group the Trunk Boiz<\/a>, and East Oakland rapper Ezale. DJ Miles will close out the night. Also, lion dancing; a 15-table mahjong activation; and over 50 food and retail vendors.
Saturday, Sept. 12, 4 to 10 p.m., free, at the intersections of 8th and 9th streets and Franklin Street<\/p>\n

Coming soon to The Town: The Banksy Art exhibit at HJK Center for the Arts<\/p>\n

The Henry J. Center for the Arts will be using the historical building\u2019s basement to unveil over 60 original pieces. The exhibit, which is not authorized by the artist<\/a>, features iconic works like \u201cGirl with Balloon,\u201d \u201cFlower Thrower\u201d and \u201cRude Copper,\u201d and other lesser-known pieces by the England-based street artist.
Opens on Friday, Nov. 13, open daily, check website for specific times, $30+<\/a>, HJK Center for the Arts, 10 East 10th St.<\/p>\n
