While public school enrollment continues to decline across California, Sanger Unified School District is preparing for continued growth as new housing and development bring more families to southeast Fresno County.<\/p>\n
California public school enrollment dropped by nearly 75,000 students during the 2025-26 school year, a 1.3% decline and the ninth consecutive year enrollment has fallen statewide.<\/p>\n
Sanger Unified has been moving in a different direction. Over the past decade, the district’s enrollment has grown by roughly 1,600 students. Although the number may not sound outstanding for nearly a decade, it followed suit post-pandemic. <\/p>\n
Superintendent Dennis Wiechmann said the district expects that trend to continue.<\/p>\n
“As we look at enrollment, historically we actually have had enrollment growth coming through,” Wiechmann said.<\/p>\n
The district is still waiting for this school year’s official enrollment count. California’s annual enrollment figures are based on Census Day, which takes place on the first Wednesday in October. The California Department of Education typically releases the statewide certified enrollment data later in the school year.<\/p>\n
Wiechmann said early numbers point toward another year of positive growth.<\/p>\n
“We’ll see those numbers on the first day. But our projection is that we will again have positive growth coming through,” he said.<\/p>\n
The growth comes as neighboring Fresno Unified School District prepares for fewer students.<\/p>\n
Fresno Unified projects losing nearly 1,800 students this school year as the district deals with declining enrollment and financial pressures.<\/p>\n
Superintendent Misty Her recently said the district is considering several options as it looks at its future footprint.<\/p>\n
“We are looking at exploring possibilities of boundary changes, consolidation of programs and possibly campus consolidations,” Her said.<\/p>\n
Fresno Unified’s situation reflects a much larger challenge facing districts across California.<\/p>\n
Researchers have pointed to declining birth rates and migration as major drivers of the state’s enrollment decline. The rising cost of living has also made it increasingly difficult for some families to remain in California.<\/p>\n
In Fresno, the median home sale price has increased by roughly $80,000 since 2020.<\/p>\n
For Sanger Unified, new housing is helping create the opposite challenge, preparing for additional students.<\/p>\n
Wiechmann pointed to development in the Loma Vista area, Fresno’s Southeast Development Area, and the City of Sanger as potential sources of continued enrollment growth.<\/p>\n
“When you look at the building that’s coming in the Loma Vista area and the Southeast Development area and also in the City of Sanger, there’s a lot of new construction coming in,” Wiechmann said. “And I think we’ll see that growth not only for this year but continue for the next few years out.”<\/p>\n
Sanger Mayor Frank Gonzalez said the city has added significant amounts of housing in recent years, including affordable housing.<\/p>\n
“In the past four years, it’s close to 1,200 new single-family homes, along with two new affordable housing projects,” Gonzalez said.<\/p>\n
City records show 86 new single-family homes were finalized during the last fiscal year, with hundreds more planned for future development.<\/p>\n
Gonzalez said Sanger has also annexed approximately 380 acres as the city looks to accommodate additional housing, businesses and jobs.<\/p>\n
“We annexed all the way to the State Route 180,” Gonzalez said. “And once we get infrastructure out there, we have talked to different hotel groups, different restaurants, different housing developers.”<\/p>\n
Gonzalez said the North Academy annexation project could become a major driver of future growth for the city.<\/p>\n
The school district is trying to stay ahead of that development.<\/p>\n
Sanger West High School was built as part of the district’s expansion, and another elementary school is planned on Temperance Avenue.<\/p>\n
“The new elementary school that we’ll be going in on Temperance, that is an example of that also,” Wiechmann said. “So we are building for that growth. So that is our plan, trying to stay ahead of that process.”<\/p>\n
The contrast between Sanger and much of California is becoming increasingly pronounced.<\/p>\n
More than 600 California schools have closed since 2015, including 57 during the 2024-25 school year. State projections also show California could lose another roughly 710,000 public school students by the 2035-36 school year.<\/p>\n
For Sanger, the challenge isn’t where the students are going.
