The San Francisco Police Department said officers responded at about 9:20 a.m. and arrived to find the woman with major injuries from the dog attack and the dog, a light brown pit bull terrier, next to the victim.

Video from Citizen App showed another person trying to keep the pit bull away and then a police officer restraining the dog with a snare pole, leading it away as first responders attended to the victim.

Medics arrived and took the woman to the hospital with injuries that were life-threatening, police said.

An officer is seen securing a pit bull by the next with a snare pole following an attack that left a person with life-threatening injuries, Sept. 8, 2026.

                Citizen App

A police spokesperson said that while the dog was being restrained, it became unresponsive and was declared dead at the scene and the city’s Animal Care and Control took custody of the remains.

The dog’s owner was not located at the scene, police said.

A spokesperson for SF Animal Care & Control said the agency had no additional information about the incident.

A witness to the attack said she was on her way to work when she saw the attack and called 911 immediately.

“She was walking by. The dog was with the owner. And the dog just jumped and attacked her,” said witness Ashley Powell. “Just started pulling her, biting her hands, fingers, chest, face.”

Powell added that the attack went on for about 10 to 15 minutes even as other passers-by tried to pull the dog off the woman.

“I had residents up there saying, ‘Get the dog off of her, get the dog off of her,'” Powell said. “A lot of people were going up and trying to pepper spray the dog but it was just still trying to attack the lady.”

Another witness told CBS News Bay Area that the owner was present when the attack started and attempted to intervene, but he eventually fled the area.

“He’s out here quite often. When I do see him, he is always with his dog,” said witness James Richmond. “Most of the time, they are sitting down so you don’t really see if a leash is there.”

District 2 Supervisor Stephen Sherrill says he’s been sounding the alarm on off-leash dogs in the Tenderloin since the city’s dog court went on a hiatus last year. The dog court resumed taking on the backlog of vicious dog cases in June.

“And look, it’s great they have hearings scheduled for October with a new judge for dog court, that’s fantastic,” said Sherrill. “But having dogs off leash, having owners that are irresponsible is so dangerous, it’s unbelievable, and now we can see it with our own eyes.”

Police asked anyone with information about the dog attack to contact the department at 415-575-4444.

          More from CBS News

In:

A dog attacked a woman in San Francisco on Tuesday morning, leaving the victim with severe injuries, police…

[30
94428,101,103,102,104,106,105
post-458231","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-san-francisco","tag-dog-attack","tag-san-francisco","tag-san-francisco-headlines","tag-san-francisco-news","tag-sf","tag-sf-headlines","tag-sf-news
["GET
