<\/a>SACRAMENTO, Calif. \u2014<\/p>\nThe man who killed himself during a standoff with Sacramento deputies along Highway 50 had been stalking a woman for months before executing her outside a Panera Bread, officials said Wednesday.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve seen the video myself. Unimaginable,\u201d Cooper said. \u201cThis young lady was chased down and gunned down, and then he stands over her and executes her. Unbelievable.\u201d<\/p>\n The victim and Rohit had known each other for several years through work, although they worked for different companies, sheriff\u2019s spokesperson Lt. Amar Gandhi said. Investigators believe Rohit eventually developed a fixation on the woman.<\/p>\n A news release from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office identified the man as 22-year-old Rohit Rohit. He is believed to have stalked and harassed the 38-year-old woman, who has not yet been identified, since at least January of this year. That’s when she discovered an Apple AirTag under her car’s hood.<\/p>\n The sheriff’s office said the harassment and stalking worsened, describing one instance in which Rohit deflated the woman’s vehicle and followed her to work so he could offer her help. Rohit also allegedly got a copy of the woman’s apartment key and entered her home while she was sleeping.<\/p>\n Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office<\/p>\n When the woman learned of this the following morning, the sheriff’s office said Rohit claimed he entered her apartment out of concern that something had happened to her when she did not answer.<\/p>\n Despite these instances, the sheriff’s office said the woman initially declined to pursue charges or get a restraining order. Detectives stayed in contact with the woman for months.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019ve seen this pattern of behavior. We\u2019ve seen kind of where it leads sometimes,\u201d Gandhi said.<\/p>\n In May, the sheriff’s office said deputies spoke with the woman and urged her again to get a restraining order, which she did. On July 29, deputies got a report that Rohit dropped off random grocery store items at the woman’s front door, which violated the restraining order.<\/p>\n The sheriff’s office said it learned that on the day of the deadly shooting, Rohit parked his vehicle just before 3 p.m. at the Panera parking lot at Northrop and Howe avenues, which is where the woman would ultimately be dropped off.<\/p>\n KCRA, Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office<\/p>\n Rohit approached the woman and started accosting her, the sheriff’s office said. As the woman tried to run away, Rohit chased her down, pulled out a gun and shot her multiple times. After she fell to the ground, Rohit shot her in the head at close range.<\/p>\n | VIDEO BELOW | Highway 50 shutdown: LiveCopter 3’s minute-by-minute view of the standoff<\/p>\n Rohit fled afterward, but Sacramento County Sheriff Jim Cooper said deputies were able to track him down within minutes with help from witnesses and Flock’s camera system.<\/p>\n \u201cFortunately, a good witness, a good Samaritan, was there, saw it, took photographs of the suspect\u2019s vehicle and called 911 right away,\u201d Cooper said.<\/p>\n Deputies confronted Rohit on eastbound Highway 50 at Watt Avenue, where Rohit ultimately shot himself to death. The crime scene shut down the highway for hours while deputies investigated.<\/p>\n The suspect had no known local criminal history<\/p>\n Rohit had no known criminal history in Sacramento County and had not previously interacted with the Sheriff\u2019s Office, Cooper and Gandhi said.<\/p>\n Investigators had not yet determined how Rohit obtained the woman\u2019s apartment key or the firearm used in the shooting. Gandhi said detectives would examine whether the gun was legally purchased or registered and whether the restraining order should have prohibited Rohit from possessing it.<\/p>\n Detectives were also processing both vehicles, reviewing surveillance video and interviewing people who knew the victim and Rohit.<\/p>\n Although the suspect is dead, Gandhi said detectives will continue investigating to provide the victim\u2019s family with information and closure.<\/p>\n \u201cWe can\u2019t give the family the victim back, but we can give them information, help them get closure and really piece the puzzle together on how they got here,\u201d Gandhi said.<\/p>\n Cooper urged anyone experiencing stalking, threats or relationship violence to seek help and report the behavior.<\/p>\n \u201cDomestic violence is real,\u201d Cooper said. \u201cIf you\u2019re a young woman or man involved in a relationship and it involves violence, get out, because it can turn to this.\u201d<\/p>\n The victim\u2019s name had not been released pending notification of her family.
