As the Bay Area swelters through a three-day heat wave<\/a> this week, climate analysts announced Wednesday that August marked the hottest month ever recorded in California and across the world.<\/p>\n

A report from climate organizations found global temperatures in August reached 1.65 degrees Celsius higher than levels since before the Industrial Revolution, making it tied with July 2023 as the hottest month in recorded history.<\/p>\n

Scientists used a 1.5-degrees-Celsius climate threshold to track warming in comparison to the preindustrial era between 1850 and 1900 – before human activity influenced our climate.<\/p>\n

The European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service conducted the report in collaboration with the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, a research institute producing global weather predictions. The record highs, according to the report, can be attributed to emissions from burning fossil fuels and rapidly increasing sea surface temperatures associated with El Ni\u00f1o conditions<\/a> in the Pacific Ocean.<\/p>\n

“Combined with record global sea surface temperatures and the warmest summer on record for Western Europe, these observations show how climate change is driving extremes across both the atmosphere and the oceans,” Samantha Burgess, strategic lead for climate at ECMWF, said in a statement.<\/p>\n

“The impacts of these conditions are increasingly being felt by communities, economies and ecosystems across the world,” Burgess added.<\/p>\n

Additionally, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported the warmest summer in the contiguous United States in the administration’s 132-year recording history.<\/p>\n

California saw its hottest August ever and is on track for the hottest year on record, according to the NOAA. Nevada, New Mexico and Colorado also set records for their warmest average August temperature, the report found.<\/p>\n

Most of the record-breaking temperatures in the Golden State were clustered in the Central Valley and more southern regions, according to the NOAA. California also saw record-high average daytime maximum and average nighttime minimum temperatures last month, the NOAA report found.<\/p>\n

The Bay Area continues to offer a corner of reprieve compared to the rest of California, as the NOAA reported most of the region saw near average August temperatures within two degrees of normal. Contra Costa, Alameda and Santa Clara counties pushed slightly warmer with above average temps last month, according to a county-level map.<\/p>\n

California’s sweaty summer wasn’t just thanks to heat. Southern California also saw record humidity levels<\/a> between June and August with ocean temperatures along the coast driving the spike. The average dew point across 10 Southern California counties was 2.6 degrees above the normal from 1991-2020, according to data from PRISM Climate Group at Oregon State University.<\/p>\n

Bay Area residents saw an unusually warm start to September, with temperatures reaching the high 90s and even hitting triple digits<\/a> in parts of central San Francisco, according to the National Weather Service. Many cities and counties also issued heat advisories earlier this week warning residents to stay hydrated and prepare with cooling supplies.<\/p>\n

Temperatures are expected to drop<\/a> throughout the Bay Area on Thursday as the sea breeze returns.<\/p>\n
