Survivors of the Dixie Fire, which burned nearly one million acres in California five years ago, must now decide whether to build permanent homes or vacate their properties after an emergency ordinance allowing temporary RV living expired.<\/p>\n

Survivors of the Dixie Fire, which devastated nearly one million acres across five California counties five years ago, are now being forced to either build permanent homes or leave their properties as an emergency ordinance allowing them to live in RVs and trailers has ended. <\/p>\n
The Dixie Fire, sparked in the Plumas National Forest when a Douglas fir tree fell on PG&E power lines, destroyed more than 1,300 homes and businesses, including much of the town of Greenville. <\/p>\n
“It doesn’t seem like it was a long time ago, but we still feel it, you know?” said Adam Wangsgard, a survivor of the fire that nearly wiped out his hometown in 2021. <\/p>\n
| PREVIOUS COVERAGE | California regulators agree on $45 million penalty for PG&E’s involvement with 2021 Dixie Fire<\/a> <\/p>\n “Just to go through what we went through, it doesn’t disappear just like that,” he said. <\/p>\n For the past five years, Wangsgard has been living in a trailer on his property. <\/p>\n “Just like staying in the trailer, it’s like if you have no other choice,” he said. <\/p>\n However, an emergency ordinance in Plumas County that allowed survivors of the Dixie and Beckwourth fires to live in RVs and trailers on their properties was not extended by county supervisors. <\/p>\n “We’re coming up on five years, and we’ve seen what happened in Paradise, after their fire, and we’ve seen what happens in this scenario,” a county official said during a meeting. <\/p>\n Wangsgard, like other survivors, received a letter from the county stating, “Beginning July 1, 2026, temporary modifications of various land use regulations adopted for wildfire recovery will no longer apply.” <\/p>\n Now, his options are to build a new home or leave. <\/p>\n “Fork out all this money, or get out. It just doesn’t make any sense,” Wangsgard said. <\/p>\n He explained that while he had plans to rebuild, financial challenges have made it difficult. <\/p>\n “I had intentions to build, but you run out of money quick. Permitting and everything, it’s hard, and doesn’t happen overnight,” he said. <\/p>\n The damage from the Dixie Fire remains visible in the Plumas National Forest, where survivors say recovery assistance has been limited. <\/p>\n “With this many fires burning and these places, like with FEMA and all of it. It’s not really designed to help out the victims really. It doesn’t feel like it when you’re in the moment,” Wangsgard said. <\/p>\n PG&E, whose equipment was linked to the fire, settled with the California Public Utilities Commission for $45 million without admitting criminal liability. <\/p>\n Efforts to get a response from the Plumas County Board of Supervisors have been unsuccessful.
