A shortage of commissioners forced San Jose\u2019s Parks and Recreation Commission to postpone its official nomination to rename downtown park Plaza de Cesar Chavez until October, months after a major sex abuse investigation tarnished the late labor leader\u2019s legacy.<\/a><\/p>\n

The nomination, which followed an open pitching process and ranked-choice survey conducted online earlier this summer, was supposed to take place on Wednesday. Only four out of 10 commissioners were present when a quorum was called. Staff members were heard on the phone trying to get commissioners to attend the meeting, but only one more showed up. The board needed six to continue the meeting.<\/p>\n

This was the second time the vote has been delayed to rename San Jose\u2019s most prominent landmark, a 2.3 acre park, named after Chavez. The commission failed to get enough members, who serve on a voluntary basis, to attend last week. Parks and Recreation spokesperson Ed Bautista told this news organization that some people were ill the previous week, and others might not have been able to clear personal obligations for the special meeting schedule.<\/p>\n

Next month\u2019s gathering is a regularly scheduled meeting, which members are informed of well in advance, Bautista said. He expects the nomination to be formalized then, at which point it will go to the San Jose City Council for final approval.<\/p>\n

Results from an online ranked-choice survey of San Jose residents were released last month by parks and recreation staff after weeks of vetting proposed names for the downtown park.<\/p>\n

Plaza de San Jose was the clear-cut top choice<\/a>, receiving the most first-place votes (4,116) and the highest ranked-choice score (3.96). The other finalists, in order of their ranked-choice scores, were Farmworkers Plaza (2.99), Plaza del Pueblo (2.96), Plaza Park (2.72) and Plaza de Quetzalcoatl (2.36).<\/p>\n

The commission is expected to formally endorse Plaza de San Jose as the park\u2019s new name once it does meet.<\/p>\n

Notably absent from the survey were specific names of labor leaders and prominent figures in San Jose, which some residents were hoping to see become the park\u2019s new name.<\/a><\/p>\n

The original list of suggestions included naming the space after labor icon Dolores Huerta, Filipino farmworker leaders, local music legends Los Tigres del Norte, or Blanca Alvarado, San Jose\u2019s first Latina councilmember. Others included Tommie Smith and John Carlos Plaza, Rod Diridon Plaza and The Doobie Brothers Plaza of Musical Arts.<\/p>\n

Under the city\u2019s naming policy<\/a>, a proposed name had to meet specific criteria \u2013 such as representing a geographic location, a historical event, or an individual who typically must have been deceased for at least five years and made significant contributions to San Jose.<\/p>\n

The survey and the commission\u2019s eventual nomination are advisory. The department has said the survey \u201cwill provide valuable insight into community preferences that will be considered with the recommendation made to the Parks and Recreation Commission.\u201d<\/p>\n
