Peruvian shop owner in Old Sacramento uplifted by surprise visit from SNL’s Marcello Hernandez<\/p>\n

A struggling Peruvian small-business owner in Old Sacramento found an unexpected moment of joy when Saturday Night Live comedian Marcello Hernandez visited her shop, Mi Tiendita Munaycha, and shared a dance that has since gained attention online. <\/p>\n

Jessy Flores, the shop’s owner, said the visit came at a time when she needed a reason to smile. “I think it was a good time to have Marcello here even though we didn’t know… I didn’t know him, but now I am his fan also,” Flores said, laughing. <\/p>\n

Behind the uplifting moment lies a more difficult reality. Flores opened Mi Tiendita Munaycha more than three years ago to sell Peruvian crafts, clothing, and food, but she has struggled to break even due to slow foot traffic and rising costs. <\/p>\n

“I moved to this location because it’s a front store, a little bigger, better of course, but it’s still very slow\u2014the traffic\u2014and the expenses are the same,” Flores said. <\/p>\n

She explained that the cost of importing her products from Peru has significantly increased. “It’s super super hard. Since I started, what I pay to import all the fees, cargo… all the fees to ship and bring my stuff here has increased like 100 percent… like $1,500 now. Before it was $700,” Flores said. <\/p>\n

While the comedian’s visit won’t change the store’s direction, the attention it has brought has given Flores a small boost. “There are people who are reaching out to us about what we offer and how they can buy our stuff,” she said. <\/p>\n

Flores plans to downsize to a shared space with another Peruvian business owner in Carmichael while also searching for another job to make ends meet.<\/p>\n

Since the video of her dancing with Hernandez was posted online, she said a few new orders have come in. <\/p>\n

“I want to thank Marcello so much, I think to life for bringing him here… he turned a sad moment into happiness,” Flores said.<\/p>\n
