According to Laguna Beach\u2019s emergency announcement, six homes in the city have been yellow-tagged, meaning that the structure has restricted entry, because of damage to the sea wall.<\/p>\n
Additionally, several beaches and parking lots remain closed because of continued erosion and high surf.<\/p>\n
In Dana Point, nine homes have been red-tagged \u2013 or deemed unsafe to inhabit \u2013 and seven have been yellow-tagged after the storms\u2019 high swells damaged the properties, according to a city press release.<\/p>\n
The local emergencies will last for one full week from their declaration date, unless the cities decide to extend them.<\/p>\n
The declarations come as the National Weather Service announced Thursday<\/a> that this year\u2019s El Ni\u00f1o has a 75% chance of bringing a historic weather event, meaning that the coast will likely see even stronger storms \u2013 and more erosion \u2013 this winter.<\/p>\n \u201cMost of us have never seen this much sand leave our beaches at once,\u201d said Laguna Beach City Manager Dave Kiff in the news release.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cWe expect it to come back, but we are not counting on it, and with a very strong El Ni\u00f1o forecast we need the ability to act quickly to protect homes, beaches and public infrastructure,\u201d Kiff said.<\/p>\n The city of San Clemente is also looking to declare a state of emergency at their city council meeting next week, after seeing significant damage to the pier, including damage to a pylon and 17 braces, which could cost the city about $300,000, according to a staff report<\/a>.<\/p>\n They are also calling on the OC Board of Supervisors to declare a county-wide state of emergency to address damages and the \u201cunanticipated costs\u201d affiliated with them.<\/p>\n The declaration comes after strong surf on Sunday damaged part of the train line in San the city that runs from Laguna Niguel\/Mission Viejo station and the Oceanside stop in San Diego County, leaving the tracks closed until further notice.<\/p>\n [Read: San Clemente Train Line Closed Indefinitely After High Tide Damage<\/a>]<\/p>\n \u201cWaves overtopped the tracks in the affected area and caused further deterioration along the adjacent slope, including damage to some previously placed protective rock. The rail line closed so crews could safely assess conditions and perform additional emergency stabilization,\u201d reads a news release<\/a>.<\/p>\n Crews have been working to stabilize the tracks by adding large boulders, known as riprap.<\/p>\n However, San Clemente city officials have had concerns about riprap causing further deterioration to their already shrinking coastline, with lack of funding has been a longstanding issue with progress being made.<\/p>\n![\"\"](\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ACAE1320-9DFD-4775-BD77-97AED0EBFFA9_1_105_c.jpg\")
