The Dos Rios light rail station \u2014 a project more than 20 years in the making<\/a> \u2014 is complete. However, it won\u2019t open to the public for at least a few more weeks.<\/p>\n On Thursday, Sacramento Regional Transit and local, state and federal partners celebrated the newest Blue Line station, where construction wrapped up last week. Present for the ribbon-cutting were elected officials from the city of Sacramento and the Legislature, as well as organizations such as the Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency and the Sacramento Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce. Reps. Doris Matsui, D-Sacramento, and Kevin Kiley, I-Rocklin, were in attendance as well.<\/p>\n \u201c(The Dos Rios station) is going to make a real difference in how people connect to jobs, to housing, to education, to healthcare and to opportunity,\u201d said Pat Hume, vice chair of RT\u2019s board of directors and a Sacramento County supervisor. \u201cIt represents our continued investment in a regional transportation system that connects our communities and supports the growth of the Sacramento region.\u201d<\/p>\n The light rail station is on North 12th Street between Richards Boulevard and Sunbeam Avenue in downtown Sacramento\u2019s River District. It is located about one block from Marisol Village, a mixed income rental community that is part of a comprehensive redevelopment of the Twin Rivers public housing neighborhood.<\/p>\n The station features covered platforms, greenery, Tap2Ride machines and fencing between the two directions of travel.<\/p>\n The Dos Rios station project came from a partnership between the city, RT and SHRA. It cost $42.8 million<\/a> and was paid for though a combination of state federal funds, according to RT.<\/p>\n CPUC has yet to sign off on station<\/p>\n While construction is done, Regional Transit cannot open the station until it receives approval from the California Public Utilities Commission. The transit agency is hoping to receive consent \u201cwithin the next two weeks\u201d and then will work with the operations department to confirm the opening day, which could take about two days, RT spokesperson Jessica Gonzalez said.<\/p>\n Alyssa Moffett, a Marisol Village resident, said she was excited for the station because walking long distances has been treacherous.<\/p>\n \u201cI walked by foot to downtown when I first moved here, and it\u2019s scary… Me and my mom Ubered home,\u201d she said. Walking along 12th Street under the railroad tracks can be dangerous because people sometimes take up the entire sidewalk, forcing her to walk in the street. \u201cMy mom\u2019s my transportation with her car but gas prices are up, and we have a fixed income, so it\u2019s difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n The light rail will help Moffett travel to places on her own, she said.<\/p>\n The Dos Rios station project began in 2005, when RT conducted an operational analysis and the first design was drafted about 2015, according to 2024 board documents. RT backed away from the project in November 2023<\/a>, citing funding issues, and ultimately approved funding for the project in January 2024. Construction started in February 2025.<\/p>\n \u2018A good location for people to take the train\u2019<\/p>\n Andrea Williams-Garcia, an administrative technician for RT light rail operations, said she hopes the ribbon-cutting draws attention to the station and looks forward to riders using it to access other parts of the city. Currently, the nearest light rail stations are Globe Avenue, about 1 mile northeast, in North Sacramento and Alkali Flat\/La Valentina, about less than a mile southwest.<\/p>\n \u201cEvery time I come through this area, there are new buildings, new apartment complexes, and this is a good location for a light rail station,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s a lot of low-income buildings that are in the area and this is a good location for people to take the train to get to their jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n RT\u2019s bus Route 33 \u2014 which travels between Union Gospel Mission<\/a> and the bus stop at 12th and E streets \u2014 will close when the Dos Rios light rail station opens.
