Leo Carlsson\u2019s monstrous offer sheet<\/a>, extending defenseman Pavel Mintyukov at a much higher rate than they planned and signing free-agent additions (A.J. Greer, Nick Jensen).<\/p>\nParting with Kreider will immediately address Gauthier, whose camp reportedly turned down a four-year extension at an average annual value of $13 million. The Ducks will have $6.5 million available on top of their original remaining cap space.<\/p>\n
Gauthier\u2019s eventual AAV would have put the team over the $104 million cap, but the Ducks believe they can fit the sharpshooter\u2019s deal and won\u2019t require another cap-related move that would directly impact their roster.<\/p>\n
Because the seven-year contract Kreider signed with the Rangers saw his actual salary decrease over its term, the Ducks were slated to pay him only $5 million for the 2026-27 season. Anaheim has paid the due $1 million signing bonus. Going the route of contract termination rather than straight waivers gives Kreider some control over where he wants to play. The acquiring team could, for example, get him at a $4 million cap number instead of $6.5 million.<\/p>\n
That could make him a bit more appetizing, given how much Kreider fell off in his one season with Anaheim after a hot start. He had back-to-back two-goal games in his first week with the team and scored nine times in his first nine games. Kreider still had 13 goals in his first 22 contests, but his production tailed off dramatically despite getting quality ice time on Anaheim\u2019s top line and power play.<\/p>\n
Speaking at the NHL player media tour in Las Vegas on Wednesday, Carlsson said he and Kreider had grown close \u2014 they share the same agent, Matt Keator \u2014 and that the veteran\u2019s impending departure \u201csucks.\u201d<\/p>\n
When asked about it being a ramification of his five-year, $90 million contract ($18 million AAV), Carlsson told The Athletic\u2019s Mark Lazerus: \u201cThat\u2019s the hard part. The cap space going up in the future, you gotta think about that, too. Chris, he\u2019s leaving, but he\u2019s also really happy for me as well.
