{"id":461861,"date":"2026-09-12T18:40:17","date_gmt":"2026-09-12T18:40:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/461861\/"},"modified":"2026-09-12T18:40:17","modified_gmt":"2026-09-12T18:40:17","slug":"long-beach-state-opens-home-weekend-with-win-over-brown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/461861\/","title":{"rendered":"Long Beach State Opens Home Weekend With Win Over Brown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LONG BEACH, Calif. \u2013 Long Beach State got a lift with seven aces to open up a busy home weekend with a four-set win over Brown.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/longbeachstate.com\/sports\/womens-volleyball\/roster\/sidney-hamaker\/10020\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"10020\" target=\"_blank\">Sidney Hamaker<\/a> led the way for Long Beach State with 12 kills, with a balanced cast following with five players who had either eight or seven kills.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nLong Beach State (4-2) were stunned by Brown (1-3) in the opening set. The Beach moved out ton an early 12-8 lead on an ace by <a href=\"https:\/\/longbeachstate.com\/sports\/womens-volleyball\/roster\/madi-maxwell\/10026\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"10026\" target=\"_blank\">Madi Maxwell<\/a>, but Brown battled back, tying the set at 14-14 on an ace by Eve McLaury and eventually pushing to a 16-14 lead on a kill by Elle Holley. Long Beach State rallied back to take a 20-19 lead on a kill by Maxwell, but at a 23-23 tie, a kill by Ally Panzloff put the Bears on top and Brown edged the Beach 26-24 in the first set.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nIn the second, Long Beach State again built an early lead, moving out on top 15-11 on a kill from Maxwell. Brown chipped away, eventually tying the set at 23-23, but two straight attack errors from Fisayo Afonja finished off the set for the Beach.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nThe third was shaping up to be another tight battle, but Long Beach State took command late in the set. Leading 16-15, the Beach picked up a sideout on a Birkelbach kill, and went on a big push with <a href=\"https:\/\/longbeachstate.com\/sports\/womens-volleyball\/roster\/izzy-mahaffey\/10025\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"10025\" target=\"_blank\">Izzy Mahaffey<\/a> behind the endline, extending their lead to 23-15 before closing out a 25-17 victory.
