Two more beachfront homes in Dana Point<\/a> have been red-tagged, bringing the total to 10, and new efforts are underway for homeowners to salvage what they can.<\/p>\n

Days after powerful waves battered Beach Road<\/a>, homeowners say contractors have been working day and night to drop boulders in front of their homes to protect them from any further damage.<\/p>\n

“It’s getting worse,” said Natalie Messana, whose home is one of several now yellow-tagged. “Every day, I get a phone call that there is a new home being affected.”<\/p>\n

The city says 10 others have been red-tagged. While homeowners have received permits from the Coastal Commission, they’ve had to find and pay for the contractors themselves and say finding crews capable of doing that kind of work hasn’t been easy.<\/p>\n

The concerns stretch beyond Beach Road. Dana Point and Laguna Beach<\/a> have both declared local emergencies due to erosion impacts. Those declarations prompted Orange County to activate its Emergency Operations Center on Friday.<\/p>\n

Supervisor Katrina Foley is also pushing for the county to declare an emergency on its own. In a statement, she said, “Government must respond quickly, document the full extent of the damage and pursue every available source of recovery assistance for communities.”<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, homeowners on Beach Road are building their defenses as they prepare for what the ocean may bring next.<\/p>\n

“We’re at the mercy of everything, and I think the more resources we can get, the better,” Messana said.<\/p>\n

Assemblywoman Laurie Davis has also been in touch with the community.
