PALO ALTO, Calif. (KGO) — A perfect day on the golf course, resulted in a big win for Oakland children for many years to come. The 7th Annual Workday Charity Classic at Palo Alto Hills Golf and Country Club raised more than $5.6 million dollars to support Oakland students and families. The annual golf event is the signature fundraising event for the Curry’s ‘Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation.’<\/p>\n

“This event is our biggest fundraiser of the year and the impact it helps us unlock in Oakland is huge,” said Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation CEO Chris Helfrich. “To be able to pull together 150 of our best partners and supporters for a day full of joy and golf like this it’s a big deal for ‘Eat. Learn. Play.’ and we are very fortunate to be able to raise the money and invest it back out so that kids in Oakland get what they deserve.”<\/p>\n

The big donation was made possible in part by a generous matching gift from Aneel Bhursi, co-founder, CEO and Chari of Workday. Since 2019, nearly $15 million dollars have been raised to support Oakland Unified School District and Oakland youth and their families.<\/p>\n

“It’s been fantastic honestly because we work so hard on our mission and what we are trying to change within the community with these kids. So, when you actually start to see that come to fruition and you start to see the statistics change and these kids thriving in their environment, there is nothing better than that,” said Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation co-founder Ayesha Curry.<\/p>\n

Since the summer of 2019, ‘Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation’ has invested more than $100 million in Oakland students and families. The foundation’s focus has been to bring resources to those who need it most and making sure the pillars of food (Eat), education (Learn) and activity (Play) are met.<\/p>\n

“From the time we stepped foot out here back in 2009 before ‘Eat. Learn. Play.’ was even a thing you had an attachment to the community. You understood how much energy they give me on the court and following the journey,” added Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation co-founder Stephen Curry. “So, now to be able to take that kind of relationship and hone it into what ‘Eat. Learn. Play.’ in the way it has been able to show up through the Oakland Unified School District, the ability to make sure they feel seen and loved and create resources that they can rely on to achieve their full potential. When we show up to the playground builds and activations we have, Christmas with the Curry’s, those are highlights of the year.”<\/p>\n

Since it’s inception, the foundation has transformed 25 Oakland schoolyards and 6 gyms, and the work is just beginning.<\/p>\n

“It’s kind of gotten bigger than ourselves and more than we could have imagined, we are grateful. Any time we get a chance to be there and be present with the kids is very special,” said Ayesha Curry.<\/p>\n
